Much to many pet owners' dismay, it is still illegal in most American restaurants to dine out with your dog. This is changing little by little. Dogs are allowed at outdoor restaurants in Florida and in North Carolina. In fact, dog lovers can check out websites like BringFido.com to find dog-friendly restaurants all over the country. Still, what's the big fuss over dogs in restaurants so long as they stay out of the kitchen? (A place we're all supposed to stay out of, by the way)
My dog-loving friends in Switzerland, where doggie dining is legal and common, think this American rule is barbaric and unfair. After all, parents get to bring in their toddlers any time they want. And who's cleaner, dogs or toddlers? Who wreaks more havoc? Who is more likely to listen when you yell "sit!"
Let's compare:
Dog Hygiene Part I: Dogs owned by civilized people are housebroken and will alert owners when they need to be removed from the premises to take care of their business. Health risk low, ick factor low.
Toddler Hygiene Part I: Most toddlers are incontinent and will just poo their diapers right there next to you while you're eating your pad Thai. Health risk low, ick factor high.
Dog Hygiene Part II: Okay, that idea that a dog's mouth is cleaner than a human's is just a myth. Still, a dog's tongue carries mostly species-specific bacteria that does not harm humans.
Toddler Hygiene Part II: Toddlers are walking petri dishes.
Dog Safety Part I: Dogs need to be remain docile and under the table to avoid tripping restaurant servers. They do sometimes startle easily. Safety risk medium.
Toddler Safety Part I: Toddlers can't sit still for more than 30 seconds at a time. Response to words like "no," "come back here," "stop that" is about 50 percent depending on child. Can be strapped down to chair, however. Safety risk medium depending on durability of high chairs.
Dog Safety Part II: Dogs are occasionally given to fighting with other dogs.
Toddler Safety Part II: Toddlers are frequently given to fighting with siblings.
I asked my son, a recovering toddler and now well-trained six-year-old diner, what he thought. Without hesitation he said "It's probably way safer to eat out with a dog than with a toddler."
There you go, from the mouths of babes.

i have a service dog but i leave her when i go out to eat
Sorry, but even as an animal lover, I find this silly.
Dogs don't belong in restaurants.
Nobody is actually allergic to toddlers!
This was so dumb. First of all I have 3 pit bulls. This breed of dog is stereotyped all the time. Are you guys okay with my 3 pit bulls going to eat too? You cant let the poddle in and not the pit bull. On another note, my dog has foamy slobber when he sees food. You want that all over the place? NO. What about dog hair? You want some dog hair on your food too? It could be a very scary thing if a dog fight broke out under the tables. My kids are very well behaved and DO NOT COMPARE TO DOGS. Kids cant help that they wear diapers and go when they have to go. Your whole point of this artcal was LAME!
Some dogs are more behaved than others, just like some toddlers are more behaved than others. There would be obnoxious dogs just like there are obnoxious toddlers. You are comparing an obnoxious toddler to a very well-trained dog. The shedding and allergies thing that people keep mentioning are valid too.
But, nice cheeky article, even if it doesn't ring true. I don't think you are an idiot, lol!
I THINK THAT A LOT OF PPL FORGET TAHT THEY WERE TODDLERS ONCE ! RRRRRRRRRRR
I WOULD NEVER TRAIN MY SON , HE ISNT AN ANIMAL , HE IS A HUMAN WHO LEARNS THROUGHT EXPERIENCE AND LESSONS THAT I WILL TEACH HIM , UNLIKE ANIMALS , WHO ARE TRAIN !
IS CRAZY HOW MANY PPL COMPLAIN ABOUT SMALL CHILDREN BEING AT A PUBLIC PLACE !
PUBLIC PLACE
THE PARENTS SOMETIMES do not teach their children how to behave well and then are sooo stupid and cowards that tehy blame their children !
have manners and your children will too !
besides . i love animals , but i wouldnt share a table with them lol , my son who is a toddler will grab my food and smash it but won't lick it lol ........... and wont be licking his privates ! lol
I say leave it up to the restaurant owners. People can have allergies to dogs or be easily scared of them, especially kids under 10. To make it legal to have dogs in any restaurant is insane because people with alergies or doggie phobia would have difficulty going out. Regardless of whether a person feels dogs are safer/more hygenic than offspring, its just not fair to say let dogs in all the restaurants. And by the way, babies poo their diapers, toddlers should already be using the toilet. So that bit of your debate has no chance at winning. If that were the case the parents should be kicked out for negligent parenting. I'm assuming you would fall under that category for even saying it. I feel sorry for your son who apparently was in diapers for several years.
Yeah...anyone brings a dog in to a restaurant, and I'll be sneezing my head off. I'm not allergic to people, just dogs. Besides, kids don't have fleas and ticks. Now, occasionally they do get lice (but even adults can get that by the way). Dogs shed. One good breese, or one careless server, and I have hair in my food.
Not to mention you will have a hard time finding people and children who are seriously scared of toddlers...but it won't be an issue finding people and kids scared of dogs.
LOL That was funny! I think some people are taking this way to seriously.
I will NEVER patronize a restaurant that allows dogs. That's just nasty.
