5 Winning Appetizers to Impress the Guests

appetizers to impressWhether you're having people over or headed out, good apps start the evening off right.

Instead of always bringing a bottle of wine when you head out to the party, if you bring a dazzling snack to kick off the evening, you will not be forgotten.

As a self-proclaimed connoisseur of the small plates, I've discovered these recipes that are easy, yet impressive.

Grab some Tupperware and head out to your next event. You will always be invited back for more if you come bearing these tasty morsels.

Ricotta and Goat Cheese Spread

I've made this a zillion times, and it's always a hit. All you need is ricotta, goat cheese, lemon, basil, olive oil, and salt and pepper. You mix it together and grab some super-crisp bagel chips to accompany this dreamy, creamy app.

Savory and Sweet Spiced Walnuts

Easy to make, easy to transport, easy to serve. The Naptime Chef's recipe is a holiday standard, but you can roast up some delicious savory and sweet walnuts all year-round and greet a grateful hostess with a big ol' bag to be eaten that night, with plenty left over to nosh on at a later date.

Cast Iron Heirloom Tomato Pizza

A friend of ours made this once and I was hooked. We buy a pre-made thin pizza crust to keep it easy, and there's a lovely selection of heirloom tomatoes at our local Trader Joe's. Slice it into small bits and voila!

1 garlic clove, minced

6 tp 8 heirloom tomatoes

Fresh basil, finely chopped

Parmesan

Olive oil

1. Preheat oven to 450.

2. Place pizza dough in seasoned cast iron skillet. Drizzle olive oil all over dough. Distribute garlic and basil evenly, and place cut up tomatoes (or whole if they're small) on pizza. Cover generously with grated Parmesan cheese and bake for 10 to 15 minutes.

Chevre and Phyllo Kisses

The hardest part of this recipe is procuring phyllo dough and cutting it into little pieces. After that, you're just dropping herbed cheese and twisting it up. Nom, nom.

Guacamole

If you bring fresh guac to a party, people will be grateful. It's one of those yummy apps that has the perception of being difficult to make. But it's quite simple. Here's my recipe that gets gulped up in less than half the time it takes to make:

2 ripe avocados

2 vine-ripened tomatoes, chopped

Half a red onion, chopped

1 clove of garlic, minced

1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper (I usually use more, but you should taste)

Salt and pepper

2 teaspoons lemon juice

Mix it together -- but not to too smooth of a consistency -- and dip some chips in it!
