Perdue Farms Inc. is recalling almost 90,000 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today. They were all shipped to Wal-Mart, according to a Perdue spokesperson.

Here are the dirty deets:

Consumer complaints indicate that small pieces of blue plastic were found in 1-pound, 13-ounce bags of "GREAT VALUE Fully Cooked Chicken Nuggets." Here's the response from Perdue's Senior VP for Food Safety and Quality Bruce Stewart-Brown:

"We determined the likely source was a small plastic ring that got into the raw material before the nuggets were formed ... This would have resulted in a minimal amount of consumer packages potentially containing nuggets with the plastic, which is bright blue in color. However, out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to recall all 50,688 packages of nuggets produced in the same product run."

It sounds bad, right? But according to the USDA there have been no reports of injuries, and the health risk from the foreign materials is "low."

  • Establishment number P-33944 and case code 89008 A0160 printed on bag
  • BEST IF USED BY date of June 9, 2011
  • Each case contains eight bags of frozen chicken nuggets produced on June 9
