In honor of National Watermelon Month, check out this video of a baby eating a watermelon from the inside out.

I have been in love with watermelon lately, eating it morning, noon and night. So I can relate to the baby's enthusiastic eating of this perfect, refreshing and nutritious summer treat. watermelon

While I'm often lazy and buy the pre-cut pieces, when the big melons roll in, I love to cut one up myself. My problem is figuring out which melons are the good ones.

The National Watermelon Promotion Board (who knew such a board existed?) offers these three easy tips for picking the perfect watermelon. 

  1. Look the watermelon over. You are looking for a firm, symmetrical watermelon that is free from bruises, cuts or dents.
  2. Lift it up. The watermelon should be heavy for its size. Watermelon is 92% water, most of the weight is water.
  3. Turn it over.The underside of the watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun.

They also offer some great tips on how to handle and store your watermelon and some cool techniques that make cutting it a breeze.
