Move over Double Down, there's a new food atrocity in town: Friendly's Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt.
There wasn't much creativity in naming, as it's pretty much what it sounds like: A hamburger wedged between two grilled cheese sandwiches. And, of course, there's mayo.
Take a minute to digest that one.
One of the most nutritionally unfriendly sandwiches ever, it contains 1,500 calories and 79 grams of fat, almost triple that of KFC's disgusting Double Down.
Would you like a side of fries with your heart attack? Oh wait, it actually comes with fries.
I really want to know who would order something like this. Really.
A frat boy on a dare? Someone who just got out of jail?
Tell me it's not just your average Joe out for dinner on a Tuesday night. Please.
My instinct (and hope) is that these products perpetuate the market because they get publicity, because they get people talking about a particular restaurant -- even if it's in a very negative way. I can't imagine restaurants create these excessive items because they think and/or have found that people will actually order them.
Or maybe I'm wrong? Maybe Americans are this hungry and this in denial about what food like this can do to their bodies and their lives. Maybe Americans do eat like this and restaurants are just meeting demand.
Given our nation's obesity epidemic, I just may be dead wrong.
Do you know anyone who would order and eat Friendly's Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt?
