Father's Day Steak Kebabs on the Grill

steak kebabsHomemade blueberry pie is a Father's Day tradition in my house; and so is steak on the grill. It's so cliche, right? Dads like grilled meaty meat. But what can I say? My dad really does!

We really like marinated steak skewers. They've got tons of flavor and are easy to make if you're serving a crowd.

You can pair them with grilled vegetable kebabs (bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, etc.) -- just be sure to put the veggies on different skewers than the meat because they'll each require different cooking times. You don't want the steak to get tough while the veggies are still cooking. And if you're using wooden skewers, don't forget to soak them prior to grilling; otherwise, they'll burn.

Other sides that pair well with skewers are potato salad, corn on the cob, fruit salad -- you know, your basic backyard barbecue favorites. And for dessert? Well, pie, of course!

Marinated Beef Kebabs (from Epicurious)

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons oregano
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne
  • 2 pounds sirloin flap steak or flatiron steak, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces

Combine oil, oregano, garlic, spices, and 1 teaspoon salt in a bowl, then toss with steak. In plastic bag or container, marinate, chilled, for several hours or (ideally) overnight.

Thread about 4 pieces of beef onto each skewer, leaving small spaces between pieces. Grill beef until browned but still pink inside, 4 to 5 minutes.
