Throw a World Cup Party

Okay, granted, we're Americans. Our "football" consists of a pigskin and guys lined up in hugely padded suits on the field hitting each other. But try to keep in mind that the most popular sport in the world, futbol, or as we call it, soccer, is about to get crazy. It's the World Cup.

Think of how people party for the Super Bowl, it's a huge event, right? You drink your beer, you make your dips, and have a party. Now add the entire world to that celebration, and then times it by four and you'll get the intensity that is the World Cup. What's so special about this event is that it only comes around once every four years, and it's country against country, fighting for the title.

The tournament runs from June 11 through July 11 (US plays their first game against England on June 12).

I'm a soccer player, always have been, and even I can admit that the actual sport is not the most exciting to watch. But I think the month-long event of the World Cup is reason to celebrate. Hey, before you know it, you'll be citing off the stats of Landon Donovan. So here are some things to keep in mind for throwing a World Cup party:

It should be similar to a Super Bowl party, so have foods that people can munch on throughout the event ... the most important part is being able to watch the game. If you simply must get themed (hello, Martha Stewart), you can try serving wine from one of the countries that's playing, or, since it's being held in South Africa this year, try your hand at some South African recipes.

You can also serve food that represents the country of your favorite team. If you're cheering for Mexico, have a taco bar, guacamole, and margaritas. France is in (albeit controversially), so if you're pulling for the French, serve yummy French appetizers such as cheese and baguettes or French-style paninis.

So grab a Cristiano Ronaldo jersey (he's like the hottest player and plays for Portugal, you can't go wrong), and let's watch some futbol!

Are you planning on watching the World Cup? What team are you going for?
