If you have a few simple ingredients in your fridge, you can whip some up in just 10 minutes ... for real. I was amazed when I saw how this works. Plus, It's a great activity to do with kids, too.
See how ...
Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag from Howcast
- 1/2 cup reduced-fat or whole milk
- 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 resealable plastic bags, one gallon-sized and one quart-sized
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract or 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 2 trays ice cubes
- 6 tablespoons salt
Optional
- Waterproof winter gloves
- Chocolate or butterscotch chips
- Flavored syrups
- Flavoring extracts
Put milk and sugar in quart-sized bag and seal it. For vanilla ice cream, add vanilla extract; for chocolate ice cream, add cocoa powder. Throw in a quarter cup of chocolate or butterscotch chips if you like.
Experiment with other varieties by using 1/2 to 1 teaspoon flavored syrups like strawberry or caramel or extracts like lemon or almond.
Put ice and salt in gallon-sized bag.
Put smaller bag inside bigger bag and seal it.
Shake larger bag vigorously 7 to 10 minutes.
Wear winter gloves while you shake; the bag is cold!
Remove small bag, which now contains ice cream. Snip a hole in corner of bag and squeeze it into a dish.
Makes one serving of soft-serve consistency ice cream.

Awesome. We will have to try that one out!
I have the ice cream mixes in a bag that you add but you have to use a ice cream machine never seen where you actulayy make the ice cream in a actual bag!
This is just crazy and I am going to try it. How cool! I wonder if this is something we can do while camping this weekend, the kids would love it!
My weekend activity! Thanks.
My daughter and I tried it tonight. I recommend shaking the bag overtop of the counter or sink. I ended up springing a small leak that made some of the salt escape while I was shaking. The ice cream had a bit of a chunky consistency (almost like chunky mashed potatoes) and tasted a tad bit salty. But overall, it was a neat experience to try out with my daughter.
Use good quality zip lock bags and you will no problem. you could also use to coffee cans with lids. It works great and the kids love it
We made this over the weekend at the camp site and the kids had a blast making it and eating it. It was a lot of fun. Actually, the adults loved it too, even though they cried about cold hands. hee hee
I've made this before......in a small ziploc bag place 1 cup milk and a couple squirts of Hershey's syrup...seal & place in a big ziploc bag with ice and a lil table salt...mash up in you hands (5-10 minutes) until it it is more solid than liquid...YUMMY!!!!!!!!!
