One of my favorite summer staples is grilled pizza. There's something about cooking pizza over an open flame that makes it taste fresher and more flavorful.

While a simple margherita version is always perfect, there are so many toppings you can experiment with to create amazing combinations.

Here are a few grilled pizza toppings to consider whether you're firing one up for Dad on Father's Day or hosting an entire pizza-making party:

Cheese -- Move beyond mozzarella; consider everything from chevre to cheddar. Don't be scared. Pizza dough is really just bread, so anything you can imagine going into a sandwich or panini can work.

Meat -- Most any meat you can eat can be added to pizza -- from chicken to pork, beef to bratwursts, it's all fair "game." I love this recipe for a Grilled Steak, Pepper, and Feta Pizza.

Sauce -- Of course, a great red sauce is always good, but you can also pep up your pizza with pesto, barbecue sauce, sweet and sour sauce, or some alfredo. Just a drizzle of olive oil can work nicely too, particularly those infused with herbs.

Vegetables  -- Mushrooms, asparagus, squash, peppers, corn and black beans (for a Tex-Mex twist), spinach, kale, onions, tomatoes -- virtually anything in the produce aisle can be sliced and diced to add a nutritional boost to your pizza. Here's a great recipe for an Eggplant Parmesan Grilled Pizza.

Sweets -- Don't turn off the grill after dinner, keep it burning for dessert! You can top your traditional pizza dough with anything from Nutella to fruit for a wonderful dessert pizza, like this nice summery Berry and Pineapple Pizza.

Have you fired up your grill yet?
