In the final season of the series, on Carrie's last night before moving to Paris with the Russian, the girls are all together for their version of the Last Supper, drinking Manhattans.
"It would be childish of us to deny that our lives weren't changing. But for this night, none of us were going anywhere. That's the thing about really good friends and a really great Manhattan." -- Carrie
- 3/4 ounce sweet vermouth
- 2 1/2 ounce bourbon
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
- 1 maraschino cherry
- 1 twist orange peel
Combine vermouth, bourbon whiskey, and bitters with 2 to 3 ice cubes in a mixing glass. Stir gently. Place cherry in a chilled cocktail glass and strain whiskey mixture over the cherry. Rub cut edge of orange peel over the rim of the glass and twist it over the drink to release oils, but don't drop it in.
The Angostura bitters are in the midst of a shortage, so they may be difficult to find (the company is actually going out of business). If you're unable to find them, you can do a variation. Substitute a twist of lime for the cherry and orange. Hold the lime twist in a lighted match over the drink and drop it in (the lime, not the match!). The heat really brings out the lime flavor.
