Rare is it that we get to cover gritty hard news -- like political campaigns and murder plots -- here in the Food and Party Channel; we're making an exception today, not once, but twice!

First, former Food Network chef Juan-Carlos Cruz has been arrested for an alleged plot to murder his wife. You may know this guy from hosting Calorie Commando and Weighing In; authoring The Juan-Carlos Cruz Calorie Countdown Cookbook; oh yeah, and texting messages to the hitmen he hired to kill his wife ...

TMZ.com reports that Cruz hired three homeless men to strangle his wife. Bad news for him: The three guys were secretly working with the cops and recorded a conversation, which implicated him in the crime.

And in one of the weirder aspects of the situation, Cruz planned to pay the men $1,000 in torn-up $100 bills -- half before the murder, half after. Cruz's reasoning? He texted the guys:

"Have already been burned with whole bills then no show thats why do it this way."

Terrible. Just terrible.

In less horrible news, The New York Times profiles Food Network star Sandra Lee, who is dating New York State Attorney General (and possibly future governor) Andrew Cuomo. Some bloggers are wondering if she might be bad for Cuomo's political image -- namely because she allegedly drinks a lot and arguably contributes more to obesity than she combats it. But I think the naysayers are just jealous -- I love her!
