Some people may think sitting down to a bowl of breakfast food may sound, well, non-traditional at best, but there are many good reasons to incorporate cereal into your meal-planning rotation:
1. Vitamins and minerals: Most breakfast cereals (even the sugary brands) are fortified with vitamins and minerals, including folic acid, vitamin B6, calcium, and vitamin D. Cereal can also be very high in iron. My family doesn't eat a lot of meat, so I look to cereal to boost our iron intake.
2. Fiber: Everybody needs more fiber in their diet. A bowl of high-fiber cereal or oatmeal can give you an added five or more grams of fiber for the day. Your digestive system will thank you.
3. Kids can help: Even the smallest family members can help set the table by laying out spoons, and older kids love to practice pouring the milk. You can give someone the task of washing blueberries or slicing bananas. Everyone can get involved.
4. It tastes good! Cereal is filling, and it's satisfying. There are so many varieties to choose from that you're sure to find one even your pickiest eater will like.
5. Cleanup is a breeze.
What's your favorite cereal and do you eat it for dinner?
