At-Home Ice Cream Maker

Hamilton Beach; $29.99
Where I live -- NYC -- a gallon of ice cream costs $8. Yes, eight whole dollars! That's over the top.

Since I have a slight addiction to that cold creamy goodness but think it's absurd to pay that much, I asked my mom for an at-home ice cream maker last Christmas.

She came through with the Hamilton Beach. It's a 1.5-quart churner that doesn't require rock salt and comes with a recipe booklet.

I use it all the time. My favorite thing to make is tart fro yo with cherries ... and I'm sharing the recipe with you!

Tart Black Cherry Vanilla Frozen Yogurt

  • 1 large container whole fat vanilla yogurt
  • 20 (or so) pitted black cherries

1. Freeze vanilla yogurt until it starts to crystallize but is still soft enough to stir -- about an hour or two.

2. Add into a freezing cold ice cream maker (I always keep mine in the freezer so it's ready to go) and mix for 20 minutes until the yogurt thickens like ice cream.

3. Toss in black cherries for the final 2 minutes, pop back in the freezer 20 minutes, then serve.

If you like it sweeter, add about 1/3 to 1/2 cup of sugar.

What's your favorite flavor of ice cream or fro yo?
