Desserts: A Family Tradition

Kim Conte

browniesGrowing up, my sister, my brother, and I weren't allowed to eat a lot of junk food, candy, or sweets. But there was one treat we could count on every evening: Cookies for dessert after dinner.

I found it curious that my mother -- such a stickler for healthy eating -- would always allow each of us two cookies (as opposed to one or, I guess, half of one, which is much less indulgent).

Sometimes we had store-bought or refrigerated dough cookies -- Hey! My mom was busy! -- but often she made us Chocolate Chip Brownies from scratch. My sister, brother, and I couldn't believe our luck: Not only were these cookie bars our favorite dessert, but we got to have TWO!

Here's my mom's recipe for Chocolate Chip Blondies. Trust me: They're best eaten two-by-two!

Mix together:

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Cream together:

  • 1 3/4 cups brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup margarine
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups chocolate chips

Gradually add these two mixtures together. Bake in greased 9" x 13" pan at 350 degrees 20 to 25 min.

What's your family's favorite dessert?
