On May 1, the "greatest two minutes in sports" will go down ... the Kentucky Derby. And what better way to celebrate it than with the official drink of the derby: The mint julep.

What you need:

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 6 to 8 sprigs of fresh mint, extra for garnish
  • Crushed ice
  • Whiskey

Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together 5 minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice and adding 1 tablespoon mint syrup and 2 ounces of whiskey. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

Bonus if you have special silver julep cups (they keep it chilled).

Aaaaand they're off!

Happy Friday!

Are you a fan of the mint julep?
