Photo by ButtrflyTattoosWhen I was little, I wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up.
But I'm now grown. And I'm a writer. So close!
Though, this dream only lasted till I was about five, I would definitely dress up as an astronaut for a When I Grow Up party.
What exactly is a When I Grow Up party? Glad you asked. It's a costume party, and though it's sometimes done for kids' birthdays, I find it's way more hilarious for adults to do their own version.
Make sure you get your guests to dress up as what they wanted to be when they were kids (a firefighter, a police officer, a painter). Don't let them whine about how costumes are for kids ... that's completely untrue, my closet is living proof of that. It's definitely more fun if everyone dresses up.
Food & Drink: Since we're all kids here (at least for the night), we get to eat kiddie foods and not feel guilty. Serve mini burgers, pizza, hot dogs, and macaroni & cheese. Mmm!
But, we're not kids in the sense that it's illegal to drink, so feel free to provide the booze.
Activities: Think of all the stereotypical careers that kids want to be when they're young, and create activities out of it. For example, have a karaoke machine for the singers, disposable cameras for your guests to have fun with to represent the future photographers, and a wall covered in paper for your guests artists to draw on (and this creates a fun keepsake for you).
Decor: If you can, try to get photos of your guests when they were kids and line the walls with them. Hang mirrors to symbolize reflection (okay, that may be a little too "deep," but it'd at least make for some unique decor).
I love this party theme for a birthday ... any excuse to feel younger is a winner in my book.
What did you want to be when you were a kid?
