I don't make a habit of eating fried food too often, but if Tater Tots are on the menu -- watch out! They've been a favorite of mine since I was itty-bitty, and I can't get enough. There's a neighborhood restaurant here in Chicago that serves them in different varieties -- original, Ranch, and Cajun -- and I can never decide which flavor to order. Decisions!
Tater Tot Casserole is a family favorite around here. The traditional recipe usually calls for creamed soup and/or condensed milk, and all that creaminess can really add up in the calorie department. If you're looking for a easy dinner with a little less fat, check out this healthier, chili-style version.
As I learned from Taste of Home, adding classic chili ingredients (tomato soup and chili powder) to the traditional tater tot casserole really amps up the flavor while cutting down on the calories. I'd also substitute ground turkey for ground beef to make the dish a little lighter
Tater Tot Casserole With Chili
1 lb. ground turkey
1 small onion, diced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 (10.5 oz.) can tomato soup
1 Tablespoon chili powder
1 (16 oz.) can whole kernel corn or frozen corn
1 lb. frozen tater tots
Shredded cheese
Brown ground turkey and onion in skillet. Add salt, soup, and chili powder. Pour into large casserole dish and layer with corn and tater tots. Bake at 400 for 20 minutes or until cooked through. During the last few minutes of cooking, top with shredded cheese and bake until cheese is melted and browned.
Have you ever added chili to tater tot casserole? What is your favorite flavor of tater tots?
