POSTS WITH TAG: sister wives

If there's one thing a guy with four wives and eleventy billion children really needs, it's a Boys' Night Out. In Vegas. Or so Kody Brown seems to believe, because last night's Sister Wives was all about the uber-patriarch bonding with his brothers (Scott, Curtis, and Michael) over motorcycles and machine guns.

But that's not all that happened in Vegas ...

At 24, Michael is Kody's youngest brother. And while most 24-year-old guys are still some years away from thinking about marriage at all, Michael is on the hunt for Wife #2. Cause he's not getting any younger, his big brothers tell him in so many words.

So hang on a sec. Polygamists pick up wives in Vegas, too? Well, there's more to it than that ...

Well, they went and did it again!

Those dang Sister Wives went and made me have an emotional reaction to their lives that makes it really hard to merely roll my eyes at King Kody and his modern-day harem. Even MORE shocking, last night's episode actually got me thinking that maybe another baby wouldn't be the worst thing for the Browns. (Who, just for the record, already have 842 children. Approximately.)

Because I used to think that the main reason why Meri wanted another baby was because she's the only wife with just one kid (well, Robyn only has one kid with Kody so far, but she's new, so that's different).

But after watching Meri open up about a devastating loss, I realized I was wrong ...

Well! Even Robyn of the Perpetually Sunny Plural Wife Outlook has her limits, or so we found out on last night's episode of Sister Wives. And here we thought Christine was the green-eyed monstress of the group!

Which she is -- don't get me wrong. In fact, Christine even 'fessed up to the all-consuming jealousy that's been eating her alive since Robyn joined the Brown family as wife #4 during a heart-to-heart lunch with her "rival," calling herself "soooo jealous."

    No kidding, for realz?!

Seriously though, she really did open up. I was shocked, actually, by her honesty ...

I don't know what the producers of Sister Wives are thinking.

So far this season has been all about how Christine resents Robyn and is getting more and more disgusted with Kody and how having sister wives is really "hard work" and blah blah jealousy blah ...

And they still haven't brought up the time Janelle left Kody (and Meri, and Christine)?!

Janelle's passages in the family's new book Becoming Sister Wives is the first I ever heard about this split, which occurred before the reality show started filming (during the eighth year of Janelle's marriage to Kody).

    Poor woman.

She'd just given birth to her fifth child, Gabriel, and was suffering from "horrible postpartum depression."

    Sigh.

The experience of watching Sister Wives is seriously starting to mess with me. One second I'm all, Who the hell does this Kody character think he is, anyway? What are these women thinking? Then the next second I'm like, Awww, that new baby is so cute!!! It does kind of seem like they all love each other ... wait, what am I saying?! This is sooo NOT okay!

Like tonight's episode, which picked up on last week's Christine is muy, muy unhappy theme. And if you've been puzzling over why on earth Sister Wife #3 ain't gettin' no satisfaction? Well, mystery solved! Christine made a huge revelation ..

They're baaaack! Sister Wives has returned at last, with Season #3 appropriately premiering on Mother's Day, and you know what that means ... more of everybody's favorite Polymgamist with a Peter Pan Complex, Kody Brown!

What's that perpetual adolescent up to these days and how is it affecting his four wives, Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn? Well, apparently he's paying a lot more attention to shiny new toy Robyn and their baby son Solomon than he is to any of his other spouses. Shocking! I didn't see this one coming, did you?

You'll no doubt be equally "shocked" to learn which of the wives is most upset about the situation ...

Does reality TV imitate life or does life imitate reality TV? In the case of Sister Wives, it looks like life may at least be influenced by reality TV: A federal judge ruled that Kody Brown and his family are allowed to sue over the constitutionality of Utah's bigamy law.

Whoa! Is it just me, or is that a pretty huge deal? What started out as a guilty pleasure weekly drama documenting the ups and downs of life in a polygamist household(s) is now potentially powerful enough to make a change in legislation.

Of course the Browns aren't merely speaking for themselves; they represent a demographic we hadn't heard much about until fairly recently.

Relax, relax -- baby Solomon and mom Robyn are healthy and doing fine. It wasn't Solomon's actual birth (which, yes, took place at home) that made the Sister Wives season finale so shocking, it was what happened directly afterward. But I'll wait to talk about that until after the jump, because man, what a SPOILER ALERT!!!

Anyway, no biggie, because there were plenty of surprises that happened before the birth to concern ourselves with now. Like Christine's big reveal about what a hard time she had accepting Robyn into the family. Well, that in and of itself wasn't a huge surprise, but the part about how she felt like she treated Robyn badly was kind of unexpected. I never really noticed her being mean to Robyn, did you? I always thought it was Meri who had the major issues with wife #4.

Which is what made the aforementioned afterbirth event SO SHOCKING!

Whoa! I think I need a neck brace, cause tonight's Sister Wives gave me whiplash! First everybody was downright giddy over the first official girls' night ever for all four wives (more later on that wild and crazy evening of ... er ... giggles), then they were pouring their hearts out on the couch about the tremendous amount of stress they deal with every day, then Kody was all hyped up on goofballs over his not-first, non-official guys' night, then the wives were crying again, this time at the gym (except for one wife, who was too busy flirting!).

Sheesh! No wonder Christine is on anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds

(So that's what always made me think of her as The Well-Adjusted Wife!)

  • 'Sister Wives' Recap: The Kids Are Alright

Say what you will about reality TV families and how growing up under a microscope warps kids in a spectacular fashion, this week's episode of Sister Wives offered startling evidence to the contrary. Well, mostly. In fact, I almost think the Brown kids are better off than they would have been if their Moms and Dad didn't force them into the spotlight.

Think about it: Under what other circumstances would the four eldest Brown children (Mariah, Logan, Aspyn, and Madison) have had the opportunity to go on a tour of Boston's top colleges?

Granted, the Browns were mainly on the East Coast to take part in a panel discussion on the plural marriage lifestyle, not explore the teens' academic options. But if the family were back in Utah and nobody knew who they were, I kind of doubt any of those kids would ever have found themselves hanging out with openly gay students on the Harvard campus.
