A couple of years ago I was making a Christmas playlist to set the mood for tree trimming, cookie baking, and all of the other fun festivities that come along with the season. I started asking around for suggestions as to what to add, and hands down the most frequent and enthusiastic response was The Temptations version of "Silent Night."

Everyone said it would give me chills and be the best version I'd ever heard. I was skeptical (there are a lot of great versions out there), but oh how right there were. It is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, Christmas or otherwise. There's a flawless falsetto and just so much feeling put into it. Truly, I've never heard a better version. I'm not all that into Ke$ha, but when her song "Die Young" came out, I was slightly pathetically obsessed. I like it. Heck, I really liked it. In light of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, though, the song's taken on a new meaning. According to TMZ, the once major mega-hit has dropped drastically in popularity over the weekend, from 167 million listeners to 148 million. A music expert (can I have that job, please?) told the website that a song hasn't dropped off this fast since the Dixie Chicks got the boot after that diss to President Bush back in 2003.

Really, you can't blame a nation in mourning for not wanting to listen to lyrics that say, "Let's make the most of the night like we're gonna die young," can you?

Hooray, Winona Ryder is working again!! Yay!! And causing quite the commotion, in typical Ryder fashion. See, the 41-year-old actress recently reunited with Edward Scissorhands director Tim Burton for "Here With Me," The Killers' latest music video, and everybody is freaking out. But not freaking out in the way you might expect, like, Woo-hoo! Winona's back! No, people are freaking out like, Eeek! So creepy!!

Come on, guys, really? Winona Ryder is back! And looking fabulous, blonde wig or no blonde wig. So what if the video is creepy? Hang on, let me put that another way: So what if the (Tim Burton-directed/Winona Ryder-starring) music video (for The Killers) is creepy? What the hell else would it be?! Don't tell me Winona Ryder has been out of the limelight so long you've forgotten her goth girl roots.

It's kind of hard to say what's going on with Miley Cyrus. Seems like she's trying really, really hard to break out of that Disney mold lately. Now she's been channeling, believe it or not, the one and only Billy Idol. She performed "Rebel Yell" onstage at the "VH1 Divas" show at The Shrine Auditorium Sunday night. She rocked the new hairdo, wore a spikey leather two-piece outfit, and even grabbed her crotch a bunch of times.

Really, Hannah Montana?

The performance wouldn't have been complete without some pyrotechnics, women dancing in cages, and crowd surfing. I guess since it's called "VH1 Divas" show, Miley really wanted to unleash her inner diva ... and this is what came out? You'll have to see it to decide whether you love it or hate it.

I'm guessing that if you're a born and bred American like me, you proooobably haven't heard of Australian-British comedian, actor, composer, songwriter, pianist, musical director, and self-described "huge rock 'n' roll megastar" Tim Minchin. But he's someone we totally should know about, because he's written a sentimental Christmas song, "White Wine in the Sun," that gets at the heart of what the holiday should really be about.

It's been six years since Minchin originally wrote the tribute to Christmas, but the singer recently reported that he's "finally recorded a studio version. Huzzah!" and all proceeds from the sale of this song during the month of December 2012 will go to the National Autistic Society (NAS). Awesome!

Remember back in the day, when the only Hanukkah songs to sing were "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel" and ... I dunno, "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel"? Then Adam Sandler came along with his acoustic guitar and, well, the rest if history. I still remember watching that episode of Saturday Night Live when Sandler debuted "The Hanukkah Song," laughing so hard I was crying -- revolutionary!! In the nearly 20 years since (!!!!), Sandler's ditty has become a classic -- and it's inspired others to get into the Hanukkah parody song act. South Korean pop star PSY rocketed to international popularity over the summer with his surprise hit “Gangnam Style,” which recently became the most watched video on YouTube of all time.

How could it not? The video is AWESOME. The music is catchy and makes you want to dance, PSY’s giddy-up style dance moves are hilarious, and the whole thing just makes you smile. SNL even did a skit on the feel-good nature of the song, playing it whenever one of the characters felt sad. PSY has become such a sensation that he’s been scheduled to appear at a D.C. charity concert this month with President Obama in attendance.

It’s the song that just makes you happy. Which is why the following news just plain sucks: PSY might be profoundly anti-American.

We all had a good shudder when John Travolta and Olivia-Newton John put out a Christmas album. Now we can have a good, collective cry as we watch the first video from their album. The twangy, cloying, altogether unnerving single "I Think You Might Like It" has been turned into a three-minute Christmas cringe-fest complete with odd facial hair, terrible plastic surgery, and Kelly Preston's kids.

If you loved Grease, you'll hate this. In fact, everyone probably hates this. There's no one in their right mind who watches this video and thinks, "Wow, John Travolta seems so straight! And man, I love those hip-breaking dance moves!" You just gotta see what I'm talking about.
