The Olympics haven't even officially begun, but an athlete has already died. Nodar Kumaritashvili, 21, a Georgian luge competitor, died after a horrific accident during training today.

"Georgian slider Nodar Kumaritashvili has had a serious crash in the final run of official training for the men's singles on Friday," an official statement says. "He fell out of the track when he crashed. He was treated on site by medical staff who administered CPR, and was then taken away in an ambulance."

The track, located at the Whistler Sliding Centre in Whistler, B.C, has already caused some injuries to athletes. While I think that it's important to have a competitive track, athletes' safety should take priority.

My heart goes out to this young man's family.
