Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins

After 23 years together, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins are breaking up, People magazine reports today. Sarandon's publicist made the announcement but said she would not comment further, so we'll all have to wonder about the details.

Apparently the couple have been separated for months.

According to People, Sarandon, 63, and Robbins, 51, met on the set of the baseball movie Bull Durham, where they made a number of steamy sex scenes. They have two children together, Jack, 20, and Miles, 17.

In addition to acting, the couple is know for their liberal political views and took an active stance against President George W. Bush during the Iraq War.

This is the most startling celebrity breakup since the news that Mel Gibson filed divorce papers on his wife of 28 years, Robyn. Gibson and his new partner, Oksana Grigorieva, just had a baby daughter last month.

Can any celebrity couple stick it out for the duration? Besides Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward (RIP), I can't think of anyone ...
