Most people have a certain scary movie that has stuck with them for whatever reason.
Mine's Stephen King's It. When I was young, my friend and I thought it would be fun if we snuck and watched it behind our parents' backs. Turns out, Mom was right and I've been freaked out by clowns ever since
Like It, some horror movies play on phobias (does The Birds ring a bell?). Some are based on urban legends (who wants to pass by a mirror after watching The Candyman?) some are all about the blood, guts and gore, and others are just downright creepy like The Shining.
I went through a bunch of posts on CafeMom and calculated the top ten scariest movies, according to you guys. Here's the list:
- The Exorcist
- The Ring
- The Grudge
- Saw movies
- Candyman
- It
- Exorcism of Emily Rose
- The Blair Witch Project
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Strangers tied for 9th
- Pet Semetary and Nightmare on Elm Street movies tied for 10th.
Does your top scary movie make the list? What types of scary movies do you tend to be the most scared by?

2 and 3 were not scary at all....5 makes me laugh now just cause it is not scary.......i think the hills have eyes should be on there and the blair witch project?! seriously lol
I LOVED the original Halloween when I was, oh, about 4 years old, lol! I still have the original VHS that I would watch everyday:) "It" definitely scared me as a child, and I didn't like Pet Semetary (loved the book though), mostly because of the dead animals I always thought of when watching it! But, even as a child, not many movies scared me. I loved Candyman, and it was great to see the Candyman on Psych a few weeks ago, made me want to go out and buy the DVD! Now the only movies that scare me are ones that show real situations. When I saw Halloween (Rob Zombie's remake) back in '07 after my daughter was born, I thought I was going to have a panic attack because of the way the children were treated in the beginning!
The Shining will always be my #1. It was the first horror movie that I ever saw as a kid and it scared the poodoodles out of me. A few years ago I realized I hadn't read the book and it scared me all over again.
the only 2 i have seen in the list are the ring ( i watched a little of it ) . Elm streets are my favorite .... I would like to see it .. because everybody that is scared of clowns says that is why ...
Oh I love Paranormal Activity. We saw it yesterday. Someone told me it was a documentary so I thought it was real until the end. That made it more scary.
The original Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Exorcist, the Shining are all great scares. Never did get the buzz about the Blair Witch Project.
Pet Semetary....probably one that I will *never* watch all the way through....timing was not hte best as friends had just lost their little brother in a hit-and-run accident....and he looked a little like Gage. Totally creeped me out.
Blair Witch...I htink it was more tha camera work than anything that got to me. Being from MD and knowing the area they were filming in made it less freaky. However, for those that don't know, there is an active witches coven as well as a satanic group in Elicott CIty, MD....and they make sure to place guards all around their compound - even on the hills that are across the roads from the compound....and don't try to drive between the big rigs that look like they are parked for the night...they are also guards of a sort....yeah, btdt...didn't sleep much at all those nights
Paranormal activity was a waste of time. The Poltergeist movies should be up there.
Just curious as to why The Blair Witch Project is listed as #8 and then it says it's tied for #9 too. I didn't find it scary at all. Seriously, Canyman is the only one that scared me in that whole list.
I think "Paranormal Activity" should be on there! It's very new though. It w as a pretty slow movie and I just kept waiting for something scary to happen...but most of the really freakky stuff happened in like the last 30 minnutes.
