Tuesday's episode of Law & Order SVU has stirred quite a discussion around CafeMom on vaccinations.
busymomma75 summed up the episode well in her post in the Newcomers Club: It is a murder case where a mother gets arrested for murder of a little girl because she didn't vaccinate her son and he got measles and passed it on to other kids who were playing at the park at the same time as him.
Vaccination is a very touchy subject, and it's a personal decision each mom makes.

I LOVED it and it made ALOT of sense. My DD is vaccinated because I feel it's my responsibility to vaccinate her .
wow that makes no sence considering the vaccination is supposed to keep children from getting it, so if my daughter gets sick your son shouldnt get it if he is vaccinated. But it is tv so I guess you can't believe all the crap on it.
I shut it off halfway through. It is the parents' CHOICE to vaccinate. Well, that and Hilary Duff can't act. I chose to vaccinate my son, and I stand by that decision, however it is my right to decide! My son won't be getting the chicken pox vaccine, because scare tactics and intimidation don't scare me - the risk of complications according to the stats on the CDCs website is so low, that he'd have a higher risk at dying by car accident!
The other thing that you NEED to point out is that the little girl's mother didn't bring her to a pediatrician! Had she sought treatment, her daughter likely would be ALIVE.
I thought It was stupid...for one I really don't see how they could Prove that it was her son (In Real Life)..because Vaccines are Not 100% and Vaccinated People can get these illnesses from other Vaxxed people (It happened with whooping cough in a highschool here...A vaccinated kid was the one who got it and spread it around)
Plus I don't watch these shows to have people push their agendas....I can make my own choices..and a TV show is the Last thing that would sway me....If a TV show is what makes a women decide one way or the other...she shouldn't have kids!
Happymom18, that does make sense, however, it's not how viruses work. If unvaccinated children contract a virus and spread it, it proposes the opportunity to the virus to mutate into a new strain. With new strains of a virus created, the vaccinated children WOULDN'T be protected. This is what worries me when people don't selectively vaccinate but instead throw all vaccinations out the window without a second glance. It used to be thought that you could only be infected with Chicken Pox once. Now it is mutated to the point where you can catch it multiple times. The Common Cold is a virus that will never be cured or vaccinated against because it's strains are too numerous to control. This is why a lot of people fear that there will never be a TRUE cure or vaccination for AIDS.
If we all did what we could to make sure a virus stopped DEAD in it's tracks (vaccinating responsibly, quarantining yourself when sick, practicing safe-sex and being very cautious) the world would be an AMAZINGLY healthier place. There is RARELY a such thing as a SOLEY personal choice. The choices we make can impact society as a whole.
I didn't see the episode but I wouldn't put it past law enforcement to start charging mothers of children who didn't vaccinate and caused the spread/mutation of disease therefore harming others based on their decisions. It is something we very well could see in the future.
The baby who died was too young to get the MMR vaccination. She caught Measles from an unvaccinated child who was old enough to have been vaccinated and hadn't. Some children will always get some childhood disease before they are of the proper age to be vaccinated. I don't think the mother of the unvaccinated child should be prosecuted. If a person's child dies, they naturally want to make somebody "pay for it" but it isn't always a good idea.
At this moment, my sister's granddaughter (11 months old) has the measles. She is too young for the MMR. Where did she catch it? Who knows? She is not in mortal danger or dying, she is just an extremely unhappy baby who can't go home because she has a 1 week old sister! Even if it was known where she was exposed to them, it wouldn't be right to put the mother of the contagious child in prison for this.
Our CHOICES get taken away from us all of the time. We have to follow carseat laws for safety. In many states, it is illegal to smoke with children in the car, for safety. We can't consume alcohol and drive, for safety. The list goes on and on.
We don't realise how many decisions we don't get to make ourselves anymore. Our "rights" are ALL slowly turning into "priveledges" because many people cannot make their personal choices safely. People are thinking only of themselves and their own family unit, rather than the community and global impact of what they do. After mishaps occur, the law has to step in and force people to be community minded.
If we all made responsible, educated choices, a lot less laws governing what we can and can't do. We can't just demand that the law/government back off when we put others at risk.
I'm not bashing unvaccinated people per say. I just see TOO many moms out there throwing out ALL vaccines because it's a current FAD when they don't do any research themselves. Bravo to the moms that do it because they've researched. Shame on the moms that piggyback off of others but have no clue themselves.
I saw that episode and was annoyed by it. I watch TV for entertainment not to be preached to. I turned it off once it was clear they were going to try and make non vaxers out to be nut jobs.
Normally I love SVU but what a dumb and offensive episode.

See I feel that same about Moms that DO vaccinate. A large number of people feel they HAVE to, becasue of school. And truth is you don't. And I was one of those moms. My kids have had vaccinations and they won't anymore.
I haven't piggy backed anyone. I am not doing it because it is "in" right now. I don't beause I bust my butt to give then oraginac food I'm not about to allow them to be injected with Formaldehyde: Antifreeze: Borax MSG, aborted fetus, latex, animal viruses........shall I go on?
