The divorce isn't the only surprise. People magazine reports that Robyn and Mel have been separated for three years!

The Gibsons, married since 1980, share seven children, but only one under 18. Robyn Gibson has requested joint custody of their son Thomas who turns 10 on Tuesday.
In addition to Thomas, the couple have six older children: Milo, 19, Louis, 21, William, 24, twins Edward and Christian, 26, and daughter Hannah, 28.
Mel and Robyn Gibson released a joint statement Monday:
Throughout our marriage and separation, we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so.
I can't believe the couple was living apart for three years, without the paparazzi finding out. People magazine claims they separated shortly after Gibson's DUI arrest in Malibu in 2006 and the separation has been quite amicable.
Mel Gibson is worth $900 million, according to Fox News. I am floored by the news of the divorce and by the news of a three year separation. Rumors are flying right now about Mel Gibson but I am just sad.

I don't understand couples divorcing after THAT LONG of a marriage. I'm so disappointed..
His wife deserves half of everything after being together that long. 28 years ago he didn't have much of a career. I just hope it doesn't get too nasty.
Wow. That's crazy. But then again.... I am not sure there are any Hollywood marriages that I used to feel so strongly about that are still together. I have developed an attitude of refusing to be shocked by divorce when it comes to famous people.
This doesn't surprise me at all. He has had a lot of personal demons to face. He HAS had quite a career. His net worth of upward of $900 million dollars. They did not have a prenup. HIs wife will still have one child at home. My prayer would be that they could get it together. They have seven kids. That is a lot of lives affected and they have a lot of years invested in a family. It is always sad to see people split up. grannywilson
It will be the state laws for divorce whether of not she'll get 1/2. A "no fault" state says they split everything 50/50 - debt AND assets. Then according to his income compared with her income will decide how much child support and alimony she will receive - of course I am assuming she will get custody. This surprises me as well with their strong Catholic background.

I'm surprised and very saddened. I'm glad they've been able to keep it out of the tabloids, though, as well as not lowering themselves to bickering and fighting.
i'm not surprised they've been separated x3 years. i think a lot of people struggle at a certain point in their lives and mel really turned me off with all this garbage 3 years ago too. since they ARE private we don't know what's going on, but it's not surprising that it's hard to overcome even in private.
