After a public outcry from parents and media, Chris Brown took himself out of the running for the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards.
My 11-year-old daughter and her friends thought it was wrong that Chris Brown should be nominated for a Kids' Choice Award. Because Brown was charged with two felonies for allegedly beating and making threats against singer Rihanna. The pictures and details about the Brown-Rihanna mess are on the cover of every magazine, TV show and website. It's hard to miss.
Just days ago, the children's TV network told the Associated Press that Brown's nomination would stick because:
Chris Brown was nominated by kids several months ago based on his body of work as a performer, and the kids who vote will ultimately decide who wins in the category.
Even after getting strong reactions from parents and the media, Nick continued to do nothing to address the situation. Reaction from the public included:
- A petition urging Viacom to remove Brown from the list of nominees was posted online Saturday. By Wednesday, the petition had 12,000 signatures.
- The PR nightmare continued for Nick when CNN and celeb TV shows began reporting the story. Mom bloggers were outraged by Nickelodeon putting Brown on a pedestal.
Now it's over and Chris Brown has been allowed to save face and bow out.
Why didn't Nickelodeon give Brown the boot? Wrigley and the Milk Mustache campaign immediately pulled their sponsorships with Brown, right after he was arrested.
I am trying to wrap my head about the fact that a children's TV network, which programs for children 2 to 14, would hold up a person charged with two felonies as a candidate for a children's award!
Is anyone at Nick smarter than a Fifth Grader? I can't be the only mom who is upset that Nickelodeon was out-to-lunch regarding Chris Brown! Talk to me ladies! This is wrong and unacceptable in my opinion. What do you think?
