Angelina Jolie Cares More About Syria Than Her Wedding & That's Why We Love Her

You haven't heard by now? Where you been?? Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are finally married! Yes! Finally! Everyone's waiting with bated breath for details about the rings, the dress, the flowers, the amazing location, how her kids were involved, etc., etc., etc. But leave it to Angie and her superhuman ways to help put everything into perspective.

Instead of gushing about her nuptials, Angelina released a statement about Syria. Of all things. Syria. Doesn't get much more depressing than that, and Syria is likely the last thing on any other newlywed's mind. But that's what makes Angie Angie. Good for her for helping the rest of us realize that their wedding should mean significantly far less than what is going on in the rest of the world.

On Friday, after news broke about her wedding just the day before, here's what she had to say:

"Three million refugees is not just another statistic," Jolie said of the people who had to flee Syria because of the violence due to the civil war. "It is a searing indictment of our collective failure to end the war in Syria."

She went on to say: "International stability is steadily bleeding away in Syria. UN Security Council Resolutions are being ignored; war crimes are being committed on a daily basis; regional countries are staggering under the human burden; and Syrian refugees are dying in the Mediterranean sea, trying to reach Europe."

Well, that's one way to make people shut up and stop obsessing about their Saturday, August 23 romantic wedding in France. "We need to see a new attempt to resolve the conflict and greater efforts to support more than 13 million Syrians who are in desperate need," she said. "The reputation and credibility of the international system is at stake with so many thousands of lives threatened in Syria."

Kudos to Angelina for not running with the media attention surrounding her about her wedding to enhance her starpower, but to bring to light the atrocities that are taking place that we really should be focusing on. Say what you will about these two, but Angie and Brad have used their fame and fortune to do a lot of good in this world. We may be entranced and blinded by celebrities and their riches and fame and weddings, but sometimes they have to remind us not to ignore the real issues too.

Angie definitely could have not said anything publicly in light of her wedding and just remained tight-lipped until the circus died down. But choosing instead to highlight the millions of refugees fleeing their own country due to civil war? And not post a thousand Instagram photos of her dress and flowers and kids? Gotta give credit where credit's due.

Are you surprised Angelina released a statement like this so soon after her wedding day?
