Breaking Bad fans, are you looking forward to Better Call Saul? I admit I wasn't thrilled about the spinoff announcement, but I've been warming up to the idea ... especially after reading that the cast now includes the supremely talented Michael McKean.
We don't get a glimpse of McKean during the very first Better Call Saul teaser -- in fact, the super-short promo doesn't show much of anything at all, except Saul's younger hairline -- but there's something about a few seconds of wisecracking Saul Goodman that makes me really eager to see what this show has to offer. Oh, and in addition to releasing the clip, AMC has officially committed to a premiere date.
The promo aired during last night's Breaking Bad marathon, and I'll go ahead and deflate your expectations now: it's only 9 seconds long. Whaaaaat? Still, it's better than nothing, so take a look:
"Lawyers: we’re like health insurance. You hope you never need it, but man oh man, not having it? No." Ahhh, I hadn't realized how much I missed Saul. Bob Odenkirk was fun on Fargo and all, but I think he was born to play Saul Goodman.
Saul appears younger here than he did on Breaking Bad, which makes sense given the fact that this is a prequel set in 2002. He may actually appear in Better Call Saul as his alter ago Jimmy McGill, because it's been reported that a billboard showed up in Albuquerque last month advertising legal services from "James M. McGill," with a phone number that had a voicemail from Odenkirk himself.
Ten episodes of Better Call Saul will begin airing in February of 2015, and AMC seems crazy confident that it will be a hit, because it's already been renewed for a second season. We'll just have to wait and see if the show ends up being another huge network success (airing it next to The Walking Dead should help), but I'm feeling hopeful -- and eager to see what other promos start popping up in the weeks to come.
What's your gut feeling about Better Call Saul?
