Robert Downey Jr.'s son Indio was charged with felony drug possession, stemming from his June arrest for cocaine. TMZ reports that the 20-year-old was also charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and, as a first-time offender, will be eligible for a drug diversion program.
RDJ has handled the situation the coolest way a dad could under such circumstances -- he thanked the L.A. County Sheriff's Department for "their intervention." The Iron Man actor has famously struggled with drugs and addiction, winding up in jail before he got clean and sober in 2003.
At the time of Indio's arrest, the actor told Us Weekly, "Unfortunately there's a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it ... there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we’re all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he's capable of being ... we're grateful to the Sheriff’s department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale."
As much as it sucks to be hit with a felony for cocaine possession, this may be the best thing to happen to Indio. A felony is a big freaking deal, not a slap on the wrist. Hopefully it will cause him to take some serious stock of the path he's headed down and decide to take a 180 before he lands himself behind bars like his dad.
Especially since he has such a great support system. It seems like Downey has a wonderful attitude about it -- sort of a, "crap happens, there are consequences, but no judgment because obvs."
Let's hope Indio uses the help and support system he has available to him before he gets in too deep.
