What the heck happened to Screech? The beloved nerd from one of Gen Y's childhood television staples, Saved By the Bell, has sort of gone off the deep end in recent years. First there was that whole self-released sex tape thing in the mid-2000s, and then in 2009, Dustin Diamond authored a tell-all book about the series, titled, Behind the Bell.
Zack Morris was not impressed. Mark-Paul Gosselaar stopped by HuffPo Live this week, along with his Franklin & Bash co-star Breckin Meyer, and was asked his thoughts about Diamond's recollection of what happened on the set of the early 90s sitcom.
The 40-year-old actor was remarkable poised when asked about the upcoming Lifetime movie, The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story, which is based on Diamond's Behind the Bell.
He admitted that he doesn't talk about those years much, but it's not because minds it, he just doesn't remember a whole lot of it. "I don't mind talking about it, I just don't really remember that time," he said. "But also, everything I do remember was extremely positive."
Meyer, also 40 and fellow child actor of the 90s, was not so reserved. "This guy's such a d--k," he chimed in. "I don't know Dustin at all, but like, everything I read… [Gosselaar] and I have talked endlessly about Saved by the Bell. I grew up at the same time, I was acting -- I used their sets one time when I did a pilot … the Dustin Diamond thing is just so silly. It's just so negative and it always bums me out."
"It is negative," Gosselaar added. "That I must say. Everything I've heard about his book is it is negative. I don't remember those things. My experience on the show was very positive ... that's why when people say, 'Oh, you don't like talking about it,' I don't mind talking about it, I just don't really remember that time ... everything I do remember was extremely positive."
Meyer again piped up in Gosselaar's defense, "I know Elizabeth [Berkley] and Tiffani [Thiessen] and Mario [Lopez]and everyone has nothing but like awesome [things] to say about that except for Dustin. I'm like, 'That might be you, bro.'"
"I think a bunch of it is bulls--t," he continued. "I think he's so full of s--t, like his sex tape… you saw it! That's not him! Screech is not packing that. Get the hell out of here. He doesn't have six Beldings beneath him. There's no f--king way. You're full of s--t, Dustin."
Allowing his former co-star some grace, Mark-Paul just said, "It's his perspective."
Holy moly, so that just happened! I guess we shouldn't expect to see any reunion specials in the near future. Or ever.
Do you believe Dustin Diamond's tawdry behind-the-scenes claims about Saved By the Bell?
