'Walking Dead' Romance: Daryl's Feelings for Beth Finally Explained

Walking Dead Daryl BethWhile we impatiently tap our feet waiting for season 5 of The Walking Dead to get underway (and obsessively re-watch the trailer in order to try and figure out why that one melty zombie is so incredibly disgusting-looking), here's something to ponder: did Daryl have a romantic attraction to Beth last season? Or was it more of a brother/sisterly vibe?

Actor Norman Reedus addressed this much-debated topic at Comic-Con last week, and while he didn't come right out and definitively put the matter to rest one way or another, his comments were VERY interesting. In fact, I'd go so far as to say anyone hoping for a Daryl/Beth hookup will be pleased by what Reedus had to say.

The insight Reedus gave into Daryl's connection with Beth makes it clear there was something more than a friendly, comrades-on-the-run thing happening:

If Daryl has a thing for Beth or whatever, I always saw that as, if he did, he didn’t understand those feelings. He might have felt them, but it wasn’t a thing. He was sort of uncomfortable with those feelings, but there might be hope somewhere down the line and then it was taken from him, again. Reunited with his brother, taken. Found his family in the prison, taken. Almost got Sophia, taken. It’s like over and over and over again. And that happens to all of us.

We saw the two of them grow close last season during the episode where Beth wanted to get drunk and Daryl was like "YER FIRST DRINK AIN'T GONNA BE NO DAMN PEACH SCHNAPPS" then they end up in that hillbilly shack guzzling moonshine and Daryl yells at her a lot but then he cries and Beth tells him to let go of who he used to be and then they burn down the shack together as the Mountain Goats play in the background. But was that love starting to happen, or just a human connection in the midst of a dark and terrible world? Emily Kinney, who plays Beth, says she understands why viewers may have been hoping for the former:

I find it so fascinating that the audience will immediately go to, you know, just because this happens or that happens they want that. That's what we live for, is love and romance and art.

Of Daryl's feelings for Beth, Reedus says this:

Beth was kind of like this long dark tunnel. She was kind of like this little flame at the end of it. He got closer and closer to that flame and thought maybe he could see something and maybe there would be light and it’s getting warmer and warmer ... and then someone blew it out.

So take that as you will, Walking Dead fans! Personally, I'm still holding out for a Carol/Daryl romance, which frankly seems FAR MORE AGE-APPROPRIATE, but honestly I'd probably love to see Daryl shack up with anyone, maybe even a stray varmint pelt, as long as we get a love scene or two.

Assuming Beth is rescued from whatever organization seems to have kidnapped her, do you think she and Daryl will get together?
