New Captain America Is African American -- Guess Who? (VIDEO)

falconYou wouldn't think you'd care too much about who the new Captain America would be -- but the choice may really surprise you (unless you love the Captain America comics, readers have been predicting this for weeks)! First, Marvel announced that Thor would be a woman, and now Steve Rogers (played in the films by hottie Chris Evans) is passing the torch so another hero can get his moment in the spotlight. Sam Wilson, aka the Falcon, will be the new Captain America!

You oughta know who Sam is after watching the badass movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Newcomer Anthony Mackie as the Falcon stole the show in that role. Mackie also starred in The Hurt LockerWe Are MarshallMillion Dollar Baby, and even was in the same movie as co-star Chris Evans, What's Your Number? If there is a new movie with Anthony as Captain America, following the plot of the comic books, few fans will be able to resist that!

Of course there is going to be a Captain America 3, most likely starring Evans, and there's also that pesky new Avengers movie coming out, also with Evans reprising his role as Captain America. So it may take a while for Mackie to finally take the helm as the lead in his own movie. But diversity has long been an issue with these superhero comics and movies, and choosing Sam Wilson as the next CA is definitely a step in the right direction.

Wilson was created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan. His character first appeared in 1969's Captain America #117, and that was when readers saw the first African-American superhero in mainstream comics (the Black Panther was the first black superhero, but he was from Africa). 1969? That is pretty damn sad.

Anyway, the Falcon will become the new Captain America in October's Captain America #25, written by Rick Remender with art by Carlos Pacheco. And yes, we are aware this is comic book news and not official movie news, but Mackie plays the Falcon in the movies and it's very easy to see him embody this new role.

Here is the official announcement on The Colbert Report in case you wanted to check it out:

The plot may be a little convoluted in the Captain America universe, as you can see. But thanks to Stephen Colbert, it should be a tad more clear. Plus, who wouldn't want to use that shield on the war against Nickelback? Priorities, people! Seriously, though, it feels like nowadays we could use our very own Captain American to solve the world's problems. Maybe someday ... for now, we can only hope that Mackie gets to star in his own Captain America movie in the very near future!

Do you think Anthony Mackie should star in an upcoming Captain America movie?

Um, I hope you know this is for the comics. Which, believe or not, do not follow the mcu. If anything the movies will follow the plan that Bucky Barnes- played by Sebastian Stan-Will be the new Captain America.

I think you must be confused. This isn't for a movie but the comic books.....Stir writing at it's finest!

Yeah Jenny, these are for the comic books. I doubt that they will be changing the movies.

Getting ahead of yourself, aren't you? A, this is comic news. B, you act as if it's a foregone conclusion that Mackie will take over the role of Captain America. Never underestimate Hollywood's desire to screw with expectations when big money is involved. Case in point: Ask Conan O'Brien how his expectation of taking over from Jay Leno worked out for him.

Also, Thor was a woman and a frog (yes the animal) in the comics in the past so it's not like things don't ever change
