Some sad news today, Glee fans. It looks as the sixth and final season of the beloved Fox hit has been trimmed from it's typical 22 episodes just 13. The Hollywood Reporter says they've learned that series creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk decided together with the network and the studio that the best way to end the story is with "one final run of 13 consecutive episodes."
The show received some its lowest ratings ever during the fifth season, so the move isn't too surprising. But hardcore fans are bound to be disappointed. Hey -- at least they're ending it, instead of just leaving it hanging, or dragging it out like CBS did with the completely useless last season of How I Met Your Mother.
Glee has been left off the fall schedule, but the plan is for a midseason return as part of Fox's 2015 lineup. An exact date and time slot haven't been specified yet, but Murphy wants to make the final episodes a "big event" for the fans.
The original cast will return (except for Cory Monteith -- RIP), but Murphy has said it won't be New York-centric. Back in April he said, "The final season is really its own story and its own location and while the New York stuff will be alive, the final season is not New York-centric at all."
Could that mean a re-relocation back to the Ohio high school music room where it all started? Or something completely new?
Murphy has hinted that there will be time jumps in the last few episodes, and all the loose ends will be tied up for us. He said, "It really [will be] a lovely, fitting season that…dwells on the original people that were on the show and what happens to them and how they give back. That really is the last season.… We'll revisit some of the new kids that came and went. There's a return of the Jane Lynch-Matt Morrison characters in a big way. It's a really interesting, very sweet, satisfying ending to the story."
I don't think we could ask for more. It may be a shorter run than many fans were hoping for, but it looks like it's going to be sweet.
Are you disappointed that Season 6 of Glee has been cut in half?
