Over the weekend Robert Downey Jr.'s son Indio Downey was arrested in West Hollywood, California, for drug possession. The 20-year-old son of the Iron Man star was the passenger in a car when it was pulled over after a traffic stop. He was found with cocaine on his person and was arrested and was held on a $10,000 bail. He was released on early Monday morning.
It's a call no parent ever wants to get, but it had to be especially devastating given Robert's own personal past.
As we know, Robert Downey Jr. had a very real and serious battle with drug addiction, which led him to do time in prison. However, he has been clean and sober since 2003, and may be his son's biggest source of inspiration in fighting his demons.
Robert Downey Jr. released a statement to TMZ about his son's arrest saying:
Unfortunately there's a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it. Also, there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we’re all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he's capable of being. We’re grateful to the Sheriff’s department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale.
According to reports, Indio has struggled with drug use for years but he is not at war with his demons by himself. His father has been "deeply involved" in his treatment to try to keep clean.
Though Robert Downey Jr. reportedly feels a "degree of guilt" for his son's drug use, he has been there and he knows all too well about the dangers and destruction involved with drugs. Having his father on his side, fighting along with him towards sobriety, is definitely in Indio's favor. Hopefully, with his father's help, Indio can follow his father's footsteps once more and become "another recovery success story."
