Are you sick and tired of all the Game of Thrones show vs. book comparisons yet? I'm not! Season 4 is well behind us, wrapping up a truly magnificent 10 episodes -- fans were treated to everything from a crushed head to a controversial rape scene, another huge battle, a Purple Wedding, and a death-on-toilet (it doesn't get much better, does it) -- but that hasn't stopped the incessant analysis of what showrunners have done to change the original source material. A Storm of Swords, as most book readers know, was the strongest of the series, and there was one final twist that they were really, really, really hoping to see.
The actress involved in the twist, however, seems to have put rumors to rest as far as the fate of her character goes. Let's try to get into it without spoiling too much, shall we?
MAJOR Game of Thrones SPOILERS ahead. Book spoilers in particular. Do not read anymore if you simply do not want to know.
So what did fans expect to see a glimpse of at the end of the season 4 finale?
Lady Stoneheart, of course. A super-creepy resurrected version of Catelyn Stark, who was murdered back in season 3 during the violent Red Wedding.
Come on, as Daenerys Targaryen says:
But gorgeous actress Michelle Fairley has come out to say what has happened to her character and what she believes is Catelyn's true fate. "Yeah, the character’s dead. She’s dead," Fairley told EW. "You respect the writers’ decision. I knew the arc, and that was it. They can’t stick to the books 100 percent. It’s impossible -- they only have 10 hours per season. They have got to keep it dramatic and exciting, and extraneous stuff along the way gets lost in order to maintain the quality of brilliant show."
If you wanted to know more about Lady Stoneheart and why this is such a big deal, three days after the Red Wedding, she was resurrected by Lord Beric Dondarrion (remember the guy who was able to repeatedly come back to life?). He gave his life for hers. Catelyn was still very scarred though and not able to talk, and her appearance completely changed. She became obsessed with avenging her family, taking on the name "Lady Stoneheart" and leading the Brotherhood Without Banners.
Eventually she comes across Brienne, and Brienne says she is looking for Sansa. Lady Stoneheart believes Brienne is a traitor since she has Jaime's sword. To prove she isn't, Stoneheart demands that Brienne kills Jaime or else be hanged. Brienne's fate is up in the air at the end of A Feast for Crows -- when she is about to be hanged, she shouts one word.
So clearly Stoneheart has somewhat of a role to play in Brienne's storyline -- and perhaps everyone has to be coy in order to truly shock fans with Lady Stoneheart's big reveal. At least fans can only hope. No doubt her storyline isn't over and that she still has a part to play in this massive tale. Hopefully Michelle is just fooling us and can't wait to surprise us all in season 5. How much longer do we have to wait?! (Don't answer that.)
Do you think we'll ever see Lady Stoneheart on Game of Thrones?
