Talk about cleaning house! ABC has reportedly fired both Jenny McCarthy and Sherri Shepherd from The View, choosing to spare only host Whoopi Goldberg from the sudden and unexpected bloodbath.
The network pointed to "big changes" they hope to make to the show and said The View would be moving in an "exciting new direction."
Apparently, the bubbly McCarthy, whose contract expires in July, and Shepherd, who has enough worries with her marriage going belly up, are not cutting it on the morning talk show and have not been asked to return when the show resumes this summer after its hiatus.
I can't say I'm shocked that McCarthy's contract wasn't renewed. Rumor has it she wasn't exactly an audience favorite. I think the woman is as sweet as the day is long, but she's not as easy to relate to as someone like former host Meredith Vieira, nor is she as opinionated and well-versed in the art of debate as Elisabeth Hasselbeck, whom McCarthy replaced just one year ago.
I'm a bit more surprised about Shepherd's departure. She was really starting to grow on me, and I thought she had a lot to offer the show.
Neither woman appears to be holding a grudge, though. In a statement, Shepherd said, "It’s been seven wonderful years on ‘The View,’ and after careful consideration it is time for me to move on ... I look forward to the business opportunities that lay ahead for me and I am incredibly grateful to my ‘View’ family and my fans for supporting me on this journey."
McCarthy announced she was leaving the show via Twitter: “If Sherri goes I go too. #sisters. My view will be changing too. ... Thanks to everyone at the show for your dedication and an amazing year.”
To prove they are doing a-okay, the two paired up with McCarthy's fiance Donnie Wahlberg and snapped a selfie in which they were all smiles. Shepherd posted it to her Instagram along with the message, "Mr @DonnieWahlberg always takes care of his ladies @jennyannmccarthy & me! To be continued... ;O)"
We're not sure why Whoopi was kept on -- I guess viewers just respond well to her? And don't hold your breath waiting to hear what Barbara Walters, who retired as a host from the show she created, has to say about matters. She's not commenting.
