It's been 23 years since The Father of the Bride premiered and now the franchise is ready for its third installment. Rumor has it that Steve Martin has signed on to star in Father of the Bride 3 and we're in for some surprises with the Banks family!
Last time we left them, George had married off his oldest daughter, became a grandpa, and then became a dad once again when his wife, Nina (Diane Keaton), gave birth. But now, it's time for another Banks family wedding celebration, because little Matty Banks is engaged to be married.
According to an insider, Matty is 29 and will be getting married to a U.S. Navy SEAL's son. Apparently, George is a little taken aback by the same-sex marriage and Nina kicks him out of the house. The hijinks start there. Matty was originally played by Kieran Culkin (Macaulay Culkin's little brother), but no word yet about who will be taking on the role of Steve Martin's son.
One thing's for sure though -- it's definitely a departure from the conservative, though hilarious, previous Disney movies. The production company hasn't touched on the hot-button topic of marriage equality much in the past, so this is definitely an anticipated shift. But the real question is: can anything really top the 1991 "original"?
Even the 1995 sequel wasn't nearly as hilarious as the first, so part three has a lot of comedy to live up to. Then again, it's hard to compete with any movie that had a stellar character like wedding planner Franck. If Martin Short is making an appearance, this'll be golden.
