Hey remember when Courtney Love was constantly making headlines for posting all kinds of crazy things on Twitter, and she even got sued a handful of times over the various things she was saying online? Well, according to Love, there's a very simple explanation for her unhinged behavior: she was on drugs.
I know, you're thinking this is a giant NO DUH revelation on Love's part. Except the drug in question which she says was making her "crazy" probably isn't quite what you'd expect. And frankly, I'm having a seriously hard time believing all of her problems can be traced back to one medication.
Love has confessed to The Sunday Times Magazine that her Twitter-related court troubles are the fault of taking Adderall, a drug commonly used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder:
It's a very potent speed drug -- it makes me crazy, it makes me write long, unintelligible emails and get on Twitter and say something nasty and then I get sued. I've been off it for four years now but there were about seven lawsuits and I settled most of them, took one to trial and won, and now, I've got one more to go.
Hmmm. So it was the Adderall all along? I'm ... not sure I'm buying it. I mean, for one thing, in the same interview Love admitted that she's not exactly shying away from intoxicants in general:
Moderation is key. When it comes to things like opiates, or cocaine, or even tequila, it’s hard. I love opiates and I went to the dentist recently and he gave me whatever I wanted. I said, ‘I think I’m in love with you.’ I hadn’t gotten that high in years and I was allowed to do it legally because I had to get this molar fixed.
She also blames some of her bad decisions on tequila:
I think I'm going to stop tequila because last time I drank it I ended up sending emails, then having to apologize. So from now on, my rule is if I'm going to press 'send', it needs to be before 9:30 at night and I need to be sober.
Plus, Love's history with drugs has been complicated, to say the least. Back in 2010, Love told The Fix that she thought of herself as sober, despite her daily pill intake:
When you’re used to heroin and cocaine, a few pills doesn’t seem like the end of the world. As they say in AA, it’s about progress, not perfection. I mean, abstinence is a nice idea, but I don’t know if it’s right for everyone. Especially for someone who was nursed on a steady diet of Valium and Ritalin from the time I was seven, thanks to my fine mother. I don’t do street drugs anymore. My medications are all legally prescribed by prominent physicians. I’m entirely legal.
Those "few pills" resulted in a full-blown Adderall addiction, which, oddly enough, Gwyneth Paltrow helped her kick:
I was a mess. I needed to get off it. Some crazy psychiatrist told me I needed it and I was writing all these crazy long emails and no one could understand what I was on about. I was alienating my friends. Gwyneth believed in me, she is a stalwart and I sent her a crazy email and all I got back was, 'Are you OK for cash and lawyers?' I didn't answer for three days and that was when I kicked Adderall. It took me a week to kick -- it wasn't Trainspotting hard but it was psychological. I had a lot of sex.
I'm just saying, it seems like there might have been more than one contributing factor to those weird Twitter rants. But it's true that Courtney Love does seem to be far more lucid these days, so whatever she's doing, I hope she keeps it up.
Do you think Adderall is the likely culprit for Courtney Love's strange past behavior?
