We love Lana Del Rey's melancholy sound as much as the next person (well, except for that one time on SNL, but whatevs), but maybe her moody dark side has finally gone too far.
In a recent interview with The Guardian about her upcoming sophomore album Ultraviolence, the 27-year-old "Video Games" singer made some startling comments about death. As in, she said she wished she were "dead already." Um, what?
"I wish I was dead already," she said, catching the interviewer off-guard. They'd been talking about some of her heroes, including Amy Winehouse and Kurt Cobain, and he asked if she saw an early death as glamorous. She responded, "I don't know. Ummm, yeah," before wishing for her own untimely ending.
Apparently she really doesn't like being a pop star. She said she feels constantly critiqued and targeted by critics and just doesn't want to be alive at all.
"Family members will come on the road with me and say: 'Wow, your life is just like a movie!'" she shared. "And I'm like: 'Yeah, a really fucked-up movie.'"
Whoa. If she hates it so much she wishes she were dead, why the heck is she putting a second album out? She said she "knows what to expect" this time, but doesn't make it clear that she knows how to handle it now, which is worrisome to say the least.
It's hard to imagine someone as young, beautiful, talented, and successful as Lana wishing for death with such aplomb, so here's to hoping it's some weird way to promote her new album, which is said to be just as full of beautifully somber songs as her breakout Born to Die. Otherwise, it sounds like this girl needs some professional help, stat.
Do you think Lana Del Rey really has a death wish? Does this make you worry for her?
