Who's planning to binge-watch Orange Is the New Black this weekend? Season 2 debuts in its entirety today, June 6, via Netflix's streaming service. Six of the 13 episodes were made available ahead of time to critics, and so far the response seems mostly positive. TIME's TV critic wrote, "As someone who liked, then loved, OITNB's first season, I was not disappointed. What season 2 (gives) us is OITNB getting bigger, both in its cast and its themes."
Being as how we don't have to wait 13 weeks to see the full season, the upcoming Orange Is the New Black storylines will be revealed soon enough -- but just to start getting excited about the new episodes, here's a rundown of the changes that might come as a surprise to those of us who loved season 1.
There will be penis. It's not clear whose penis, or if we're talking about multiple penises, but according to showrunner Jenji Kohan, we can expect some explicit viewing in season 2 (albeit of the flaccid variety):
I love graphic sex, the more sex the better. Very often it's convincing the actors to get naked. ... You hope everyone will just be cool about it, and then they're not. There's a lot of convincing and making people feel comfortable. (...) We have some male frontal nudity this season, but I don't think it's going to be erect.
Yeah, boners are basically off-limits for TV shows, aren't they? This is a tragic situation indeed, although it did give us one of the greatest headlines to ever appear on the Internet: "George R.R. Martin Has Heard Your Requests for Erect Penises in Game of Thrones."
We may lose the sense that a women's prison is actually sort of a fun place to be. As Kohan said,
We had a theme for season 2. A little darker, a little more fractured. We wanted to explore the groups one at a time. It was getting a little summer-campy, and we wanted to address the realities that this is prison. We needed a little more drama.
Some of the familiar faces may be phased out. There are a number of OITNB stars who have joined other shows, like Natasha Lyonne (the extremely awesome Nicky), who's starring on an NBC series tentatively titled Old Soul, and Pablo Schreiber (Pornstache), who's set as a lead in an upcoming HBO comedy. Also, Laura Prepon (Alex) has said she'll be in just four episodes of season 2. Kohan says she's willing to work around the casting issues by swapping in new characters:
If I could keep cycling people through and bringing in new people, the show could go on forever.
This season will be less about Piper. I'm glad to hear this, because ... well, I don't really like Piper. I guess I root for her, sort of, but I'm far more intrigued by the other characters. Here's what Kohan says about that:
It's becoming much more of an ensemble. As much as I love Piper and Taylor and her journey, I think people are interested in everybody's journey.
While Kohan's been tight-lipped about which backstories season 2 will delve into, we'll for sure be learning more about Crazy Eyes (yay!), Poussey, and Black Cindy. As for season 3?
Knock on wood, if there's a season 3, we're really talking about focusing in on the guards more then.
Speaking of the guards, we may stop hating Pornstache. Actually, I really enjoy it whenever Pornstache gets screen time, but he's obviously the show's main villain (although less and less of a one-dimensional one as season 1 went on). According to Pablo Schreiber, who plays Pornstache, we may be switching allegiances in the ongoing Pornstache/Bennett/Daya drama:
I think that there’s kind of a tectonic shift happening between Pornstache and Bennett and Daya in that triangle by the big point of the second season. I think you might be surprised by who you may be siding with in that triumvirate.
But don't worry, he'll still be a skeezebag:
I still wear the mustache and I still get to do horrible things to people. Nobody will be disappointed with that side of him
Oh, by the way, this is what Pornstache looks like without the mustache:
You are welcome.
Are you looking forward to Orange Is the New Black? What do you think about the show focusing less on Piper this season? Are you having uncomfortable pants-feelings for Pornstache right about now?
