The long-standing rumors about Glee costars Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison having a romantic history are true! I think we kind of knew it all along, or at least we really, really wanted it to be true, not just because we like gossipy details, but also because the pair are such good friends that it's nice to know that people can still be close friends even if the romance fizzles.
Plus, admit it -- there's something almost sordid about the teacher-student aspect of it. Matthew plays the choir teacher on the hit Fox show, and Lea was the high school superstar the first few seasons. Eh, well, that's what you get when hire 20-somethings to play high school students. In reality, the stars only have a fairly respectable eight-year age gap.
Despite both stars denial of any past romantic connection between them, Lea spilled the truth beans in her new book, Brunette Ambition. She wrote:
"When we shot the [Glee] pilot, I met Cory Monteith, Kevin McHale, Amber Riley and Chris Colfer for the first time ... I had worked on Broadway with Jenna Ushkowitz and Matthew Morrison before. Matt had been a friend of mine for years, and in fact we'd actually dated back in the day for a Broadway beat."
In 2010, Lea told HollyWood.com, "I've known Matt for years. He's been a friend of mine from New York. People are going to make things up. I think it's just because we really are so close."
Matthew also denied the rumors that year, telling Parade, "We were literally on set and I got a call from my publicist, and she got a call a minute later and we looked at each other like, 'What the f--?' It's so laughable."
Laughable indeed. So why admit to it now? I think it's probably more about why deny it then -- Lea was dating costar Cory Monteith, so it was probably more about throwing of the scent of the tabloids. Why invite rumors into a relationship when Matthew and Lea and clearly moved on, and it turns out that Lea and Cory probably had their share of issues despite their incredible bond. Why even make it an issue to talk about, when it was likely just a few dates and nothing serious at all?
I don't blame them at all for denying it, and probably would've done the same thing in their shoes.
Why do you think Lea Michele finally revealed the truth of her romantic history with Matthew Morrison?
