'Walking Dead' Season 5 Spoilers: Gareth's Horrifying Revelation to Come

Walking Dead season 5If it's a day ending in Y, it must be time for some speculation about season 5 of The Walking Dead. Even though the show's on hiatus until October, the cast and crew are incredibly adept at keeping fans whipped into a frenzy with their oh-so-strategic revelations about what's to come.

Today's roundup of season 5 teasers comes courtesy of Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and everyone's favorite poncho-wearing biceps-baring redneck Norman Reedus. Specifically: whether or not Terminus really IS full of cannibals, the "insane" vibe in the upcoming storyline, and what we can expect next season from Rick -- and Gareth.

Potential show spoilers -- and definite comics spoilers -- ahead!

Let's start with Norman Reedus, who talked to EW.com recently about the upcoming season (which the actors are just starting to film in Atlanta). When asked what he knew about the 2014-2015 storyline, Reedus confirmed that showrunner Scott Gimple and creator Robert Kirkman are just as cagey with the cast as they are in interviews:

Those guys are very good at telling you a bunch of stuff, and you sit there for an hour and you walk away and go, ‘What the hell did he just say? What’s going on?’ They’re very good at masking what they want to tell you.

Still, Reedus says we've got a rapid-pace vibe to look forward to:

From what I know, it’s gonna be just completely insane. I sort of knew I needed like a good month to rest to jump in. The storyline they’re throwing me is a thousand miles an hour.

Okay, that's all well and good, but Walking Dead actors ALWAYS refer to upcoming seasons as "insane" or "shocking" or "completely nuts" or whatever. Those descriptors are kind of a gimme at this point, so let's turn to a better source: Kirkman. Here's what he's willing to say about the Terminus cannibal theory:

I do enjoy looking at the speculation and I will say that some people are right and some people are wrong, which is always the case. And I think that people are going to be pretty excited when we come back in season 5. We’ll be revealing very quickly what it is that is going on and what it is that Rick Grimes and everybody else are up against. We’re not going to be keeping that close to the vest for too very long. So in our big season 5 premiere we’ll get some answers.

What I am taking from those comments is that, yes, Terminus citizens are cannibals, but there are still plenty of unexpected revelations to come within that story. Kirkman went on to say that Terminus's Gareth is a "big character" in season 5:

He is a very interesting character and he is based on someone in the comics. So there are some pieces of him in the comic book series that you could dig out if you were a bit of a detective, and we’ll definitely reveal more next season.

Sounds like Gareth will be based off Hunters leader Chris from the comics? If that's true, then we can possibly expect Gareth to reveal that he ate his own children at one point.

Moving on to Rick, who committed an incredibly savage act during the season 4 finale. Kirkman says that was a defining moment for him, and we'll see the repercussions when the show comes back next season:

In a sense he almost becomes a walker when he’s biting that guy’s neck out and savagely murdering this other guy. He really loses his humanity in a very big way. Which is something we’ll be exploring moving forward. (...) He can handle absolutely whatever the word is going to throw at him and that is something we’re going to be exploring in season 5.

I suspect we'll see Rick take down the Terminus antagonists in a scene similar to what happened in the comics: Gareth and other Terminus residents will beg for their life, only to be mutilated and killed by a vengeful, harder-than-ever Rick Grimes. Is it awful to say I can't wait for all this violence and mayhem? Because:
