Star Wars castStar Wars fans, the big day is finally here. After many, MANY months of increasingly frenzied speculation, the Star Wars team has announced the official cast for Star Wars: Episode VII. First of all, as you know, it's being directed by J.J. Abrams. The screenplay was written by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, who was co-writer of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. John Williams returns as the composer (hooray!). And it's scheduled to open worldwide on December 18, 2015.

Wait, you wanted to know who's actually starring in the movie? It's a done deal: Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher will reprise their original franchise roles -- along with Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Kenny Baker (R2-D2), and Anthony Daniels (C-3PO). I know, right? But wait, it gets even better.

Joining the original stars of the saga are John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, and Oscar Isaac, all of whom have previously been linked to Episode VII through the rumor mill. I honestly don't know whether I'm more jazzed to see the ENTIRE MAIN ORIGINAL CAST, or Adam Driver, who's the only reason I ever tune into Girls anymore. (Driver's role hasn't been announced, but the character is said to be a villain on par with Darth Vader.)

Here's what J.J. Abrams said in the announcement today:

We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.

Yeah, no pressure there. Screw it up and you'll be forever known as Jar Jar Abrams, dude.

There are three more actors joining the cast who are a complete surprise, even amongst the more diehard Star Wars theorizers: Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow. Ooooh, those are all good names, but I'm particularly intrigued by the inclusion of Andy Serkis, who's best known for his incredible abilities in motion-capture performance (King Kong, Lord of the Rings, Rise of the Planet of the Apes). Can't WAIT to see who -- or what -- he'll be playing.

Last but not least, check out this awesome photo of a cast read-through posted on the Star Wars website:

Oh my gosh, I just can't believe the original cast (well, except Lando ...) will be in this movie. Only time will tell if this will be a worthy addition to the franchise, but I'm super excited by the casting news and can't wait to see how this plays out on the big screen.

What do you think of the new Star Wars cast?
