George Clooney Is Engaged! OMG! (What Is Amal Alamuddin Thinking?!)

george clooney amal alamuddinRun, Amal, Run! He's right behind you!A lot of you ladies (and gents) out there will be disappointed to hear that George Clooney, self-declared eternal bachelor, is supposedly getting married!

Scratch that.

He's apparently engaged (still has to make it to the altar).

People Magazine and Page Six are reporting that Hollywood heartthrob *cough* Clooney, 52,  is engaged to Amal Alamuddin, 36, the London lawyer who he has been dating for less than a year.

Oh, where to begin?

The impetus for all these rumors is ... a ring, a BIG ring ("conspicuous" according to People), on her left hand.

We gotta say, if this IS the real deal, we aren't the least bit surprised. it was obvious that once Clooney had the guts to date someone of Alamuddin's caliber, he'd be doomed to lose his silly bet.

Clooney has repeatedly made it clear that he is NOT. GETTING. MARRIED. EVER. AGAIN. He's made bets -- for tens of thousands of dollars -- with actresses like Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, and Sandra Bullock that he would never tie the knot (time to pay up!). So far, he's won those bets, but only because he hasn't really been playing the game. Clooney has typically dated women who have been into the whole "I'm dating George Clooney" thing.

Yet, when some magazine asked him about the people (dead or alive) who he'd like to have dinner with -- he mentioned women like Christiane Amanpour. That tells you something. This is a guy who desperately wants to be high-brow and intellectual (he hangs with the President after all), but he dates low-brow and not-so-intellectual types. It's EASY to win an "I'm never going to get married" bet when you date people who don't interest you on anything but a superficial level. Frankly, it's a little sexist.

Enter Amal Alamuddin. She's a British attorney who specializes in human rights and international law. She represented Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in his extradition proceedings. She speaks 3 languages. She attended Oxford. She's attractive. Now SHE'S a catch.

It's no surprise that she got Clooney's attention. If he had dated women like her in the past, he might not have been so vocal about ruling out marriage completely. He may even have fallen in love a few times. And that's the danger here, Clooney is likely very much in love with Alamuddin. But he's only been dating her for 7 months. He's too excited! She seems like such a catch because she's so very different from what he's used to. But maybe it will work out.

The timing could be right. Clooney, 52, is getting old, he's facing his mortality. He's probably thinking about kids, a legacy. Alamuddin is impressive. She can hold her own with the Obamas, understands the big words Samantha Power (US Ambassador to the United Nations) and husband Cass Sunstein (Harvard law professor) use, and ... she doesn't need Clooney to get anywhere in her career. Clooney had to pop the question before she got away.

More on the rumors ...

Alamuddin was supposedly showing off an engagement ring in Malibu on Thursday night as she and George dined with Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber.

A source told Page Six,

George and Amal hoped keep the engagement quiet, but they can’t hide the fact that they are very happy.

And Clooney’s rep didn’t confirm or deny the engagement to Page Six, but said,

I do not comment on his personal life.

The rep's statement pretty much says it all.

He might as well have screamed: YES! GEORGE CLOONEY IS ENGAGED!

This rumor has a very, VERY good chance of being true. The only thing we're really wondering ... if we didn't make it clear by now ... What the heck is Alamuddin thinking? Girlfriend's got it going on, and she's settling for a middle-aged, middle IQ'd actor, who she's known for less than a year?

Do you think George Clooney is engaged? Do you think Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, and Sandra Bullock will make him pay up? Do you think Amal Alamuddin will wise up before it's too late?
