It's official! After a very short 84-day engagement, Jill Duggar will be a June bride when she and her fiance Derick Dillard tie the knot on June 21 of this year. The couple made us all squee a little when they announced their engagement last week, even if most of us were shaking our heads at their strange mating rituals.
Well, strange by today's standards, at least. The two have decided to not only wait to do the deed until they're married, but they're saving their first kiss for the altar too! Does that quick engagement make sense now? Wink, wink.
Even stranger (again by today's standards) is how they met. The meeting was arranged by Jill's dad Jim Bob Duggar, who had a feeling the two would hit it off.
Wait, what? Is this an arranged marriage? I mean, we knew the Duggars had good old-fashioned values, but ... ?
On the couple's wedding blog, Derick said that Jim Bob had been his prayer partner while he was doing humanitarian work in Nepal. The elder Duggar "introduced" the two, who began their relationship in a very new-fangled way -- through telecommunication.
Derick apparently talked to Jill once on the phone in 2013 and must've been smitten because he immediately started praying as to how to get to know her better. Then in August 2013, Jim Bob must've sensed the crush and approved, because he opened the gateway right up. Derick describes how it happened:
During a conversation with Jim Bob, he mentioned how he thought Jill and I might get along well, having similar personalities and direction in life. He gave me Jill's phone number and we began texting, then emailing, then skyping/talking on the phone. Over the next few months we became very grateful for modern technology as we continued to get to know each other better. Most of our conversations were centered around our values and life goals.
Aww! OK, I don't buy this as an "arranged" marriage. I'm sure that Derick let some hints drop that he was very interested in pursuing Jill and, being a smart man, discovered that the way to a Duggar girl's heart is through her parents' approval. I'd be willing to bet (and I'm not even a gambler) that Jim Bob and Michelle prayerfully considered the match before giving Derick Jill's digits.
And you know what? Jim Bob and Michelle are joyfully married. I don't think it would suck to have them as matchmakers. Many congrats to happy couple!
