Flight Attendant's Hysterical Safety Speech Actually Makes Air Travel Seem Tolerable (VIDEO)

LOL 10

Southwest Airlines flight attendantI've been on a handful of flights where the crew puts a little extra effort into the safety presentation. They want you to pay attention, after all, and people are more likely to watch when the flight attendant isn't visibly bored out of their minds while they're going through the motions of demonstrating how the seatbelt works. Still, I've never seen ANYTHING like Southwest Airlines employee Martha "Marty" Cobb, whose viral YouTube video makes me want to book a flight just to see her perform in person.

If it seems hard to believe that a three-minute pre-takeoff safety speech could turn emergency exits and oxygen masks into topics of pants-wetting hilarity, well, you need to take a look at Marty in action.

Marty Cobb has been a Southwest flight attendant for seven years, and she told Today she's been blown away by the positive response to her video:

I guess I've always had a wit or sarcasm to me. I can act like a grown up if I have to, but it's a lot more fun to make people laugh. As long as safety is our first concern, we can have fun.

She really does makes traveling by plane look like fun, which has gotten increasingly hard to do. Check her out:

I think my favorite line came when her crew was demonstrating the life preservers: "In the highly unlikely event that the captain lands us near a hot tub, everybody gets their very own teeny weeny yellow Southwest bikini." (One size fits all!) Or maybe it was the part where she said that there's a special smoking section just outside. Or maybe it was when she insisted that while the plastic air bags might not inflate, "You are receiving lots and lots of gin." Or maybe it was her grand finale: "That's what we call very cheap entertainment. Nobody had to pay extra but you certainly don't get a refund."

Honestly, I just loved the whole thing. Something tells me we'll be seeing more of Marty soon, because the talk show circuit would be crazy not to jump on her right now. Your move, Ellen.

Have you ever seen a flight attendant perform this sort of comedy routine?

Southwest flight attendants have been doing this for years. It isn't new. It's a way to get people to actually pay attention to the safety features. My dads been doing something similar since he started there. I love it.

Flights attendants for WestJet Airlines (Canada) seem to have carte blanche to do a fun safety demo if they like. Christmas is often a fun time to fly with them - one flight they insisted the plane was NOT leaving the ground until we all joined the crew in singing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. And so we did!

Yep! We had a Southwest attendant (male) who was a hoot! e.g. Re. The exit window seats: "...if you cannot perform the function...or don't know what a function IS..." His lighthearted approach to directions was a comfort to our nerves and, we paid attention!

I couldn't understand half of what she was saying.

My favorite part was when she said 'and if you are traveling with small children we're sorry.'
