Amanda Bynes' Meltdown Was All Because of WHAT?

Amanda BynesI'm a little torn on the current news about Amanda Bynes. On the one hand, Bynes seems to be happy and healthy these days and there's no real reason to keep dwelling on the issues that led her to be involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility. On the other hand, her lawyer and her mother are the ones bringing it up -- and they had to know people would talk about what they're saying.

The official word on Bynes' mental health started with a statement from her lawyer, who shot down schizophrenia rumors on his client's behalf. Now Bynes' mom has further clarified the reason for her daughter's incredibly bizarre behavior last year -- and she's blaming it all on one drug

Here's what Lynn Bynes told E! News:

Amanda has no mental illness whatsoever. She has never been diagnosed as schizophrenic or bipolar.

She says all of the actions that made Bynes a popular tabloid subject for months on end -- from the DUI to the hit-and-run to the second hit-and-run to the driving with a suspended license to the many accounts of strange public behavior to the really strange Twitter posts to the wigs to the selfies to the repeated use of the word "ugly" to the drug charge arrest after she threw a bong out a window to the various announcements of suing various entities to the fire she set in a stranger's driveway to her forcible hospitalization to the involuntary conservatorship she's still under with her parents -- are the result of smoking pot.

(Amanda) is very sorry for all the hurtful tweets, statements and actions that occurred while she was under the influence of marijuana.

Bynes' lawyer has also pointed out that her drug problem was specific to pot:

Amanda currently is on zero medication. She's devoted to living her life as healthy as possible. She's never had a history of abusing alcohol or hard drugs, and she's proud to say she's been marijuana-free for the past nine months.

So ... okay, look. All I know about Amanda Bynes is what she's shared via social media and what's been reported in the press. I'm not a doctor. I have zero qualifications for diagnosing anyone's medical condition or lack thereof. That said, I am having a really hard time believing that her entire meltdown was the result of getting stoned too much. Unless she was smoking a type of weed that's WAY different than anything I have ever smoked, not that I have any experience with such youthful indiscretions.

Honestly, these claims sound like her team is trying to distance Amanda Bynes from the stigma of mental illness. If that's true, it's certainly a sad statement about how our society views these medical conditions ... or it's an even sadder case of denial happening with Bynes' family.

What's your take on all this? Do you think it's possible a marijuana problem was to blame all along?

It's possible. I have a sister who has been addicted to heroin off and on for over a decade. She won't touch weed. It makes her nuts. With any drug, some bodies absorb and react differently.

Sorry don't buy this for one minute. People just don't react to pot that way. She may not be manic right now but this poor girl needs help because I'm pretty sure her "acting out" will happen again.

I read this only because you wrote it. Your talent isn't being used to the best of its ability. When can we expect a novel?

I beg to differ. I cannot smoke weed, it makes me all kind of paranoid. I was into it in my late teens and at first it was okay. Then I started to smoke it everyday, all day. It can make you act differently. Some people just react to it differently. Different stokes, different folks.

I can somewhat buy it, as research on long term marijuana abusers has proven changes in the hard wiring of the brain that can result in dramatic personality changes, risky behavior, acting out, etc.

Nope. Not buying it.. I think she was huffing.

Not buying it. Even if you react badly to weed, it is not habit forming so you dont keep on using it. Her problems lasted too long for it to be a problem with marijuana.

I like A/B but there is just no way this is from smoking thc. if you are willing to swallow that -I have some magic beans for sale.

Maybe legal weed. That stuff makes people insane. Or k-2. Whatever you call it. Artificial Cannabis.

Not buying it! That may have been the only thing to show up in her system days later, but something else is going on too! And if its not a substance, it's an imbalance of something! And instead of having her checked out, her parents/lawyers/etc. are just going to deny it! That's sorry!!
