After waiting for what seems like FOREVER, we finally got word yesterday that the Fifty Shades of Grey movie is more reality than fantasy now. Actual footage was screened at CinemaCon in Las Vegas! Five whole minutes worth! There's just one problem ...
Just about everyone who saw the clip used words like "PG-rated," "surprisingly tame," and "romantic" to describe what they saw as opposed to "racy," "sexual," "hot," or "kinky." In turn, fans are pretty freaked that Universal has gone and sanitized the hot and bothered love story, making it a huge entree of Hollywood romance with a tiny side of toned-down BDSM.
Devotees who were hoping for a lot more sex may have already started throwing around boycott threats, but there's really no need to worry that the movie is going to be a squeaky-clean disappointment. For one thing, the studio was probably just tailoring the clip to their audience. According to Amy Kaufman at the L.A. Times:
It's of course possible some of that footage was of the toned-down sort, thanks to the CinemaCon crowd, which can be a more buttoned-up group.
And if that's the case, we can likely bet that Universal is saving the ultra-steamy bits for the fans, who are far less conservative and more interested in seeing what's beyond the doors of the Red Room! In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if we get a sexier vibe from the official (perhaps red band?) trailer, whenever that hits the web.
Still, it's apparent that anyone hoping for an NC-17 softcore fest will have to give up the ghost, because it would seem the final cut is far more romance than erotic thriller. But being that most fans adored the books for the "love story," an emphasis on romance -- you know, with several seriously hot sex scenes -- shouldn't be a problem anyway.
Are you concerned there won't be enough sex in the movie -- or do you think it sounds like it will strike the perfect balance?
