Whoa. Isn't it weird how things work out for a reason? It's kind of hard to imagine anyone other than Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart playing Edward Cullen and Bella Swan -- but it turns out KStew wasn't the initial favorite for the role.
Australian actress Emily Browning declined her Twilight audition, but if she hadn't? Odds are pretty good that she would've been the one to nab the part of Bella. Apparently Stephenie Meyer wrote something on her blog talking about how much she loved Emily, so she probably would've pushed hard for her to land the gig.
Here is a photo of Emily, in case you aren't sure who she is.
(I know. She's gorgeous.)
And now looking back on how Kristen and Rob's lives have changed since Twilight, you'd think Emily would be kicking herself for practically giving up the role of a lifetime. But that's not the case at all. She said:
People knew that Twilight was going to be successful, but I don't think anyone guessed that it was going to be as huge as it was. If that had been me, I might not even be acting anymore because just thinking about the way they were constantly hounded by people after that film makes me feel anxious. I don't think I could have handled that. I'm pretty happy with the choices and decisions that I've made. I don't really have any regrets in that sense.
(Yeah ... ok, Emily. Whatever helps you sleep at night.)
I know Rob and Kristen didn't exactly wind up with the happy ending we all expected them to -- but can you even imagine if they'd never met and fallen in love? Even though things didn't work out, it would've been a shame if their paths had never crossed. They would've been star-crossed lovers or something.

And as far as whether or not Rob would've fallen for Emily? I guess we'll never know. It's tough to tell whether playing a pair of eternal soul mates on screen is what drew Rob and Kristen together or whether it was something bigger than that.
But considering neither of them has been able to commit to another person since their split, something tells me Rob and Emily wouldn't have had the same level of attraction. What he and Kristen had only comes along once in a lifetime. (Or twice or three times or more in their case.)
Do you think Twilight would have been the same without Kristen Stewart?
