I don't know about you, but I cannot count the number of times I've sent a strongly-worded letter to a television network about the complete and utter lack of naked dating shows that are available to me. It's 2014, for god's sake, and it's downright shameful no one has managed to produce a series that speaks to our greatest American desire: to watch nude people decide whether to hook up for the sake of reality TV.
Until now, that is. The brave men and women at VH1 have finally taken action against the inadequate representation of full-frontal blind dating in the mainstream media. The groundbreaking series is creatively titled Naked Dating, and it will "explore the art of romance free of preconceived notions, stereotypes — and clothes."
The 10-episode series is the brainchild of Lighthearted Entertainment, the ambitious production company behind series such as Extreme Makeover, The Moment of Truth, Next, 72 Hours, and Are You the One? Naked Dating will be a one-hour weekly show with each episode following a man and a woman as each dates two different suitors. At the end of the episode, the two will mull over what they’ve learned and decide whether to move forward with their prospective love matches.
Also, in case it's not perfectly clear by now, they will be naked.
VH1 says the show will be filmed in a remote exotic locale, and while you are surely salivating over the idea of seeing strangers' genitalia flopping moistly around in the tropical sun, it will be edited "according to network standards."
Susan Levison, VH1's executive VP of original programming and production, palpably strained herself in the press release to make sure we all understand that Naked Dating is actually super meaningful and should probably even be shown in schools since it includes so many powerful life lessons:
At first, this seems like a show that’s all about a noisy, provocative hook -- and we embrace that. But when you go deeper, it’s really about something that we can all relate to -- the search for true love. It’s also a series with heart and masterful storytelling -- both earmarks of an engaging, must-watch show.
Well I for one applaud VH1 for their trailblazing vision. It may sound like yet another schlocky piece of reality garbage, one that's not even particularly unique considering the fleshy plethora of other nude-themed shows like Naked Castaway, Naked and Afraid, Naked Vegas, and Buying Naked, but surely we can ALL relate to the spiritually beautiful concept of finding one's soulmate while being filmed in the nude for a dating show. Ahhh, l'amour.
How thrilled are you that Naked Dating is a thing? Like kinda thrilled or basically completely overcome and hyperventilating into a paper bag while spraying pee everywhere because FINALLY YES YES YES OH MY GOD THIS IS GOING TO BE THE BEST SHOW?
