Kate Middleton stepped out tonight to the National Portrait Gallery's Gala looking ever the royal. In fact, she looked so royal that I swear we've seen this very same look on the Duchess of Cambridge before. Oh, right! That's because we only just saw her in the very same dress -- a deep blue silk gown by Jenny Packham -- in October at the 100 Women in Hedge Funds event, which took place the day after George's christening.
'Course Kate's no stranger to recycling outfits, and we love her for it. And one of the ways she makes it work is by accessorizing differently the second or third time around ...
For instance, she also wore the Nizam of Hyderabad diamond necklace, borrowed from Queen Elizabeth for the first time tonight. Her hair was also noticeably long and styled in curls.
But all in all, if you were hoping for any sort of serious style switch-up or sartorial change of pace from the Duchess, tonight's look was sort of a letdown. Gorgeous, but very ... safe. Expected. And it seems like more and more -- especially with news that the Queen is giving her fashion guidelines! -- she's sticking with outfits that are pretty conservative and conventional. After hearing a while back that she might start going for bolder colors and patterns, it's definitely disappointing to see that she seems to be steering in the opposite direction.
I wouldn't be surprised if these cautious choices are being made simply to appease her grandmother-in-law, but as an independent, powerful woman of the world, we can't help but keep hoping Kate'll eventually strike out on her own!
